Effects of Sowing Date on Root and Seed Yield of Carrot

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Seeds of two carrot lines, viz, CR 614 and CA 136 were sown on 15 November, 30 November and 15 December to study the effects of date of sowing on root and seed yield. Both the carrot lines performed well in respect of plant growth, root development and seed yield when sown on 15 November. The line CA 614 produced the highest seed yield ( 693.0 kg/ha ) followed by CA 136 (488.5 kg/ha ) from 15 November sowing.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum time of sowing seed for the production of high quality roots as well as seeds under local condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Central Research Station of BARI, Joydebpur in 1983-84 to evaluate the effects of time at sowing seed on the yield components of quality roots as well as seed yield of carrot. The two annual lines of carrot namely, CR 136 and CR 614 were used for the experiment. The experiment had two phases: (1) from seed sowing to harvesting of roots and (2) from planting of stecklings to harvesting of seed. The treatments were arranged in RCB design with three replications. The seeds were sown thickly in rows with a row spacing of 30 cm in each unit plot (3 X 3m) on 15 and 30 November and 15 December 1983. Plant spacing was adjusted at 15cm by thinning the plants 20 and 40 days after sowing. The plants were uprooted at the age of 60 days. The roots having uniform shape and size were selected for transplanting. The shoots were cut at a length of 12.7cm form the top of root. The steckling with cut shoot and entire root were transplanted in each unit plot ( 3 X 3m ). The transplanted steckIings were spaced 30cm within and between rows. In all the experimental plots cowdung, urea, TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 15000, 116, 70 and 116 kg/ha respectively. Total amount of cowdung and TSP were applied as basal doses while, urea and MP were top dressed in two equal installments at an interval of 20 days from the date of seed sowing and steckling transplanting, Intercultural operations Iike weeding, mulching and irrigation were done as and when required. Necessary data were recorded during uprooting of stecklings and harvesting of seeds. The data were analyzed using the standard statistical procedures.
