Evaluation of Barley Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty eight exotic barley germplasm lines were evaluated at BARI, Joydebpur during rabi 2007-08 to test their performance under Bangladesh condition. Among the genotypes maximum variation was observed for grains per spike and tiller number per plant. Considering the mean values of different cluster, cluster V had the highest mean values for spike length, no. of grain per spike and 1000 grain weight. From this evaluation eight germplasm (lines) were selected.

Objectives:

To estimate the extent of genetic diversity in exotic hull-less barley genotypes available in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Twenty eight exotic germplasm along with check varieties were grown at BARI research field. The trial was non replicated and unit plot consisted of single row of 2.5 m long. Line to line distance was 25 cm. Fertilizers were applied as per recommended dose. All intercultural practices were done when needed. Data on different quantitative characters such as plant height, spike length, tiller number, grains per spike, 1000-grain wt. and yield per plant was recorded from five randomly selected competent plants from each entry. Data on 50% flowering and maturity were recorded from each plot.

Achievement/Findings:

The genotypes were grouped into five different clusters indicating lower order of diversity in population among the five clusters. Cluster IV and cluster V was found to be the largest having eight genotypes in each group. The intra cluster distance ranged from 13.43 to 7.06. The highest inter cluster distance (13.557) was observed between cluster I and V. The highest mean values for grain per spike and yield per plant was observed in Cluster II.
