Improvement of Irrigation System Performance and Assessment of Irrigation Water Quality of BAU Farm.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) farm during boro season from 19 January to 13 May 2009 to find out the effect of alternate wetting and drying (AWD) method of irrigation on water productivity and production of rice. The experimental layout was made using split-plot design (SPD) with two high yielding varieties of rice (BRRI dhan45 and BRRI dhan29) and four irrigation treatments viz. T1 (Continuous flooding with 1-5 cm water), T2 (application of 5 cm standing water when water level in the pipe fell 8 cm below the G.L.), T3 (application of 5 cm standing water when water level in the pipe fell 16 cm below the G.L) and T4 (application of 5 cm standing water when water level in the pipe fell 24 cm below the G.L). Perforated pipes were installed in the plots according to IRRI guideline to measure depletion of water level by using graduated scale. During land preparation and as top dressing recommended doses of fertilizers were used. Herbicides and insecticide were used as and when necessary. During crop establishment stage, 5 cm standing water was maintained. Irrigation treatments showed significant effect on yield and other contributing characters of rice. The highest grain yield (7.71 t ha-1) was found in treatment T3, its water use efficiency was also the highest which is 87.91 kg/ha/cm (o.88 kg/m3). The lowest grain yield (7.05 t ha-1) was found in treatment T4 and the yields for treatments T1 and T2 were found as 7.18 t ha-1 and 7.20 t ha-1, respectively. The highest water requirement (110.2 cm) was found in treatment T1 and the lowest (80.2 cm) in treatment T4. The highest grain yield of 7.33 t ha-1 was obtained with V1 (BRRI dhan45) and 7.23 t ha-1 in V2 (BRRI dhan29). Considering the interaction effects, the highest grain yield of 8.16 t ha-1 was obtained in V1T3, second highest as 7.60 t ha-1, was obtained in V2T1.

Methodology:

Series of field experiments will be carried out at BAU farm with various rice and wheat varieties combining with different water management practices in order to find out the best irrigation scheduling strategies for optimum yield of crop using minimum water. Inflow-outflow method will be used for measuring conveyance loss and various combination of low-cost lining materials will be used to reduce conveyance loss in earthen channel

Achievement/Findings:

The study revealed that different irrigation treatments had significant effect on plant height, number of effective tillers/hill, grain weight, number of spikelets per panicle and number of filled grains per panicle at various levels of significance. During the project period (01-01-2009 to 30-06-2009), the maximum (12.58m) and minimum (6.40m) depths of groundwater levels were observed during early April and early January, respectively.
