Chemical Composition of Leaf Blade, Petiole and Fruit of Papaya as Affected by Npk Fertilizer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted on the chemical composition of leaf blade, petiole and fruit of papaya cv. Shahi as influenced by application of NPK fertilizers in Chhiata soil of Gazipur. Plants producing highest fruit yield had 1.292, 0.242,0,232,0.193 and 0.027 per cent N, P,K,S and Ca, respectively, in leaf blades and 1.015, 0.231, 0.128, 0.161 and 0.357 per cent N, P, K, S and Ca, respectively, in leaf petioles. However, the yield of papaya was found to be positively correlated with P content of leaf blades and, N and P content of petioles.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of NPK fertilizers on the chemical composition of leaf blade, petiole and fruit of papaya.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during 10 November 1985 to 9 November 1986. The soil was clay loam. Properties of soil at 0-20 cm depth are presented. The treatments consisted of four levels of each of nitrogen and potassium (0, 50. 100 and 150 g/plant from Urea and MP, and five levels of phosphorus (0,50,100,150 and 200 g/plant from TSP). Besides, cowdung and gypsum were applied @ 10 kg and 100 g per planting pit, respectively. There were 12 treatment combinations. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. Each unit plot consisted of four planting pits (60 cm x 60 cm x 50 cm) 2 m apart in both ways. The entire quantity of TSP, gypsum and cowdung were applied in pits before planting. Fifty days old seedlings of papaya cv. Shahi were planted, three in a pit 30 cm apart in a triangular fashion on 10 November 1985. Urea and MP were applied in three equal installments at two months' interval commencing from second month of planting. Only one female plant was retained per planting pit and the rest was removed at flowering. The experimental field was surrounded by a row of male papaya plants. Mature petioles and leaf blades and ripe fruits were collected for chemical analysis from 11 months old plants. N, P, K, Sand Ca were determined. TSS of ripe fruits was recorded from refractometer readings and reducing sugar was determined. Correlation coefficient was worked out between fruit yield per plant and chemical composition of leaf blades and petioles. The data recorded were analyzed to find variance and treatment means were separated by DMRT.
