Genetic Analysis of Flowering Time in Brinjal (solanum Melongena L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The genetics of flowering time was studied in a five-parent diallel cross of brinjal. Mean square due to both GCA and SCA were significant indicating the importance of both additive and non-additive gene effects. In most of the cases, the cross between poor and good parents showed negative SCA effect for flowering lime. The maximum heterosis for flowering time ranged from 3.85 per cent to 9.36 per cent. Genetic components of variation analysis suggested that additive components was more important in the inheritance of flowering time. This character was observed to be controlled by two to three pairs of genes or groups of genes. Narrow sense heritability was 73 per cent indicating probability of selection in early generations. The graphical analysis also indicated wide genetic diversity among the parents.

Objectives:

To investigate the genetic architecture of flowering time in brinjal.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Central Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during October 1987 to March 1988. Five promising homozygous brinjal varieties, viz., Islampuri (P_I), Uttara (P₂), Shingnath Long (P₃), Khatkhatia Long (P₄) and Accession No. 11-1- 324 (P₅) were selected on the basis of their phenotypic diversity from the available germplasm. A complete set of 20 crosses (including reciprocals) was made during 1986. The materials comprising 25 entries (including 5 parents and 20 F₁'s) was sown during October, 1987 and transplanted in November, 1987 in a RCBD with three replications. The unit plot size was 6m x 1m with 60 cm plant to plant spacing. Standard cultural practices were followed for raising the crop. Data on flowering time were recorded in days from seeding to blooming of the first flower from five randomly selected plants per entry per replication.
