Performance of True Potato Seed (tps) Progenies Under Different Plant Spacings

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five TPS progenies were tested with three plant spacings at Bagherpara, Jessore. The maximum tuber yield (25.80 t/ha) was recorded with the closest spacing (30cm x 30cm) but it was found statistically similar to that (24.37 t/ha) obtained from the spacing 45cm x 30cm. Maximum tuber yield (26.79 t/ha) was recorded with the progeny Atzimba x R-128.6 and it was statistically identical to the yield (25.71 t/ha) obtained from the progeny HPS-1/13. The other progenies showed poor performance in yield and other attributes. The interaction effect of progeny and spacing was also found statistically significant. The maximum tuber yield (32.16 t/ha) was recorded from the combination of Atizmba x R- 128.6 with the closest spacing.

Objectives:

To compare five TPS progenies and to determine optimum plant spacing.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Farming Systems Research (FSR) site, Bagherpara, Jessore during the winter season of 1990 - 91. The experiment plot was a medium high land with sandy loam soil. During 1989- 90 crop season, tuberlets were produced in farmers' plots and preserved in a cold store. The TPS progenies were, Atzimba x R-128.6 (P₁), Atzimba x DTO-28 (P₂), HPS-7/67 (P₃), HPS-1/13 (P₄), and CIP-800226 (P₅). The spacings were, 30cm x 30cm (S₁), 45cm x 30cm (S₂), and 60cm x 30cm (S₃). The experiment was laid out in Randomised Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. The plots were fertilized @ 120, 100, 120 and 25 kg N. P₂O₅, K₂O and S per hectare, respectively. The sources of N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S were Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum, respectively. To control soil pests, Dieldrin was sprayed after land preparation and waited for four days for better action. The whole quantity of TSP, MP and Gypsum with 50% urea were applied before planting of potato tuberlets. The rest urea was top- dressed followed by 1st and 2nd irrigation at 30 and 50 days, respectively, after planting. The crop was irrigated three times and earthing up was done twice after 1st and 2nd irrigation. Tuberlets of 15-28 mm size were planted on 27 and 28 November 1990 and the crop was harvested on 4 and 5 March 1991. The unit plot size was 3.6m x 3m. To keep the crop free from disease and insects, Dimecron- 100 EC and Diathane M-45 were alternately sprayed at weekly interval starting 45 days after planting. Data on yield components were collected from 20 randomly selected plants (hill) in each plot but the yield data was collected from the whole plot.
