Effect of Mulching and Earthing Up on the Performance of Mukhikachu

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment with three levels of earthing up viz., (i) no earthing up (ii) one earthing up at 30 days after planting (DAP) and (iii) two earthing up at 30 and 75 DAP in combination with (a) no mulching and (b) with mulching were studied at the farm of Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Jessore during the kharif season 1990. Effect of mulching and earthing up on the yield of secondary corms and cormels was significant but their interaction effect on the yield was insignificant. The yield or secondary corms and cormels with mulching (26.41 t/ha) was superior to that with no mulching (20.43 t/ha), Again one earthing up produced significantly higher yield (25.81 t/ha) compared to those with two earthing up (24.56 t/ha) and no earthing up (19.90 t/ha). Mulching produced significantly higher yield of primary corms (4.69 t/ha) than that with no mulching (3.57 t/ha). Mulching in combination with one earthing up produced the highest yield (29 t/ha).

Objectives:

To observe the effects of mulching and earthing up on the performance of mukhikachu.

Methodology:

The experiment on mulching and earthing up of mukhikachu was conducted on light textured High Ganges Floodplain soils at RARS farm, Jessore during kharif season, 1990. The soil of the experimental field was of Calcarious in nature with alkaline in reaction. The crop received a total amount of 2786 mm rainfall and no additional irrigation was applied. The experiment was laid out in Factorial Randomized Complete Block Desin with four replications. Three levels of earthing up viz., no earthing up (Eo), ore earthing up at 30 DAP (E₁) and two earthing up at 30 and 75 DAP (E₂) in combination with no mulching (M_O) and with mulching (M₁) were studied. Wheat straw was used as the mulch materials at the following day of planting the crop. Medium sized seed cormels of variety Bilashi was planted at 50 cm x 30 cm spacing during first week of May. The unit plot size was 3 m x 2.5 m. Fertilizer was applied @ 70-55-100 kg NPK/ha along with 10 tons of cowdung per hectare. Urea, TSP and MP were used as the sources of N, P and K, respectively. Cowdung and TSP were applied as side dress in two splits at 30 and 75 DAP during earthing up operation. Weeding was done twice at 30 and 75 DAP. The crop was harvested at 175 DAP during fourth week of October. Data on yield and yield components of the crop were recorded and analyzed statistically.
