A Study on the Performance of Six Varieties of Plantain

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Physio-morphological characters of six plantain varieties were studied at the farm of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute, Joydebpur. The pseudostem height, base girth, top girth Iamina length and width of Kanthali were significantly greater than Anazi, Borobhagne, Hazari, Kapasi except the length of petiole of Dhalpoush variety. Kanthali produced greater number of hands (7.04) and finger (89.33) per bunch than the other varieties. Anazi gave the highest bunch weight (8.70 kg). Pulp colour of Anazi and Borobhagne is cream; Dhalpoush, Hazari and Kapasi is light yellow to reddish and Kanthali is whitish.

Objectives:

To evaluate physio- morphological characters of six plantain varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Fruit Farm of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute at Joydebpur, Gazipur during the period from 28 February 1987 to 30 January 1988. Six varieties of plantain, namely, Anazi, Dhalpoush and Kanthali collected from Rajshahi, Borobhagne from Jessore, Hazari from Chittagong and Kapasi from Dhaka were included in this study. Rhizomes (average weight 740 g) of six plantain varieties were planted of 28 February 1987 at a spacing of 2m x 2m under a Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. Nine plants constituted one unit plot. Cowdung, TSP, Gypsum and Zinc Oxide were applied @ 20kg, 350g, 250g and 5g per plant, respectively, at the time of pit preparation. The plants were side- dressed with urea and MP @ 700g and 750g per plant, respectively, splitted in six equal installments starting 60 days after planting. Weeding, desuckering, irrigation, mulching and propping were done as and when necessary. The bunch shooting of six varieties of plantain was occurred from the middle of September to the end of October 1987. The bunches of plantain varieties were harvested 90 days (from the middle of December 1987 to the end of January 1988) after shooting. Data with respect to plant height, base and top girth, length of petiole and lamina, diameter of lamina, number of leaves and suckers produced per plant, number of hands and fingers per bunch, length and diameter of fruit, colour of fruit and pulp and other characteristic features of fruit were recorded. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance. Duncan's Multiple Range Test was used for mean separation.
