Effect of Kinetin and Defruiting on Senescence to the Leaves of Bushitao Bean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Bushitao bean was grown under four different treatments: (a) Control units allowed to ripening, (b) defruiting- fruits harvested at the marketable stage, (c) kinetin prayed at 10ppm and the fruits allowed to ripening and (d) kinetin sprayed at 10ppm with sticker and the fruits allowed to ripening, to study the effect of kinetin and defruiting to the senescence of leaves of bushitao bean. Results indicated that kinetin with sticker could cause maximum delay in senescence of leaves followed by kinetin alone. The period of senescence in both of these treatments were significantly different than those of control and defruiting. Defruiting also could cause significant delay in senescence of leaves than the plants in which fruits were allowed to ripening.

Objectives:

To see the effectiveness or defruiting and kinetin in causing delay in senescence.

Methodology:

Bushitao, one of the established legumes was used as the material of the experiment. It was obtained by crossing the Bushy California Black Eye (Vigna sinensis) and the viny Singapore (Vigna sesquipedalis). It matures in 40 to 50 days, 10 to 20 days ahead of the common variety. According to Denon it does not need stake unlike the vine varieties commonly planted. This saves the farmers from the expense of polling materials. The earthen pots filled with ordinary garden soil to about 4/5 capacity were randomly arranged and replicated four times. Four pots representing four replications were used for each treatment. Prior to dibbling the seeds, the pots containing the desired quantity of soil, were watered thoroughly to their water holding capacity. Three seeds were dibbled in each pot. The plants were thinned to one per pot. At the time of dibbling, complete fertilizer (12-24-12) at the rate of 10gm per pot was applied and thoroughly incorporated with soil. There were four treatments in the experiment and they were as follows:(a) Control units allowed to ripening, (b) defruiting- fruits harvested at the marketable stage, (c) kinetin prayed at 10ppm and the fruits allowed to ripening and (d) kinetin sprayed at 10ppm with sticker and the fruits allowed to ripening. The defruiting was done at the 50 days of plant after germination. To maintain good stand, the plants occasionally were watered and weeded upto right one day before applying kinetin. Observations were made on the average (i) number of trifoliate leaves per plant, (ii) number of days required for the emergence of consecutive trifoliate leaves, iii) length and breadth of the leaves, (iv) life-span of the first two trifoliate leaves and (v) period of senescence after treatment.
