Genetic Variability, Character Association and Path Coefficient Analysis in Pumpkin (cucurbita Moschata L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic variability, character association and path coefficients were studied for vine length, branches per plant, fruit length, fruit diameter, fruits per plant, average fruit weight and fruit yield per plant in eight pumpkin lines. Genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation were high for average fruit weight, fruit length, fruit yield per plant and fruits per plant. Except vine length, all the characters had high broadsense heritability together with moderate to high genetic advance in mean percentage. Fruit yield showed high significant correlation with fruit diameter and average fruit weight both at genotypic and phenotypic level. Path coefficient analysis revealed that number of fruits per plant, fruit diameter and average fruit weight had moderate to high positive direct effect on fruit yield per plant.

Objectives:

To determine the extent of variation, nature of association and the direct and indirect contribution of component traits towards fruit yield in pumpkin.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the farm of Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong during the rabi season of 1991-92 with eight lines of pumpkin. The lines were collected earlier from different areas of Chittagong, Bangladesh. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Unit plot size was 20 m² which accommodated 4 pits with the spacing of 2.5 m x 2m. The seeds were sown directly in the field on 9 December 1991. Single plant was allowed to grow in a pit. Manures and fertilizers were applied @ 15 tons of cowdung and 150,125 and 100 kg of urea, TSP and MP per hectare, respectively. Entire quantity of cowdung, TSP and one fourth of urea and MP were applied in the pit. Rest of the urea and MP were applied as top dressing in three equal instalments 30, 50 and 70 days after sowing. All cultural operations were done as and when required. The characters studied were vine length (cm), branches per plant (no.), fruit length (cm), fruit diameter (cm), number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight (g) and fruit yield per plant (kg). Data were recorded from all four plants from each plot. Genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation were calculated according to the formula. Heritability in broad sense and genetic advance were calculated according to the formula given by Hanson et at. ( 1956). Genetic advance was estimated using a 5 per cent selection intensity. Genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients were computed following the formula suggested. Path coefficient analysis was done following the formula of Dewey and Lu (1959).

Achievement/Findings:

Results from the present findings indicated that fruit length, fruit diameter, fruits per plant and average fruit weight had high heritability associated with moderate to high genetic advance. These characters also showed moderate to high positive direct effect on fruit yield per plant.
