Performance of an Exotic Variety of Yardlong Bean as Compared with Some Indigenous Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In a study undertaken at Dacca in 1968, Kalo, an indigenous variety of yardlong bean or barbati was found to produce nearly three times vegetative matter as compared with two other indigenous varieties, Shabuj and Sitsite and an exotic variety designated String Bean. Kalo and String Bean yielded 132.49 and 132.19 maunds of pods respectively per acre, against 100.77 maunds by Shabuj and 94.58 maunds by Sitsite. String Bean produced the heaviest pods each weighing 0.55 ounce, against pods of the indigenous ones weight of which ranged from 0-36 to 0-38 ounce only. Considering the earliness in podding, heavy yield, big size of pods and production of low vegetative matter. String Bean was found to be the best among the four varieties. Since String Bean produced 80% of its crop by the 4th week of picking, there was a scope to consider whether the crop should be demolished soon after-wards without waiting for another 6 weeks for the completion of the life-cycle, to pave the way for growing a winter crop in its place.

Objectives:

To test the exotic variety of yeardlong bean against some indigenous varieties , a comparative trial was undertaken at Dacca.

Methodology:

The varieties selected for the purpose were, besides String Bean, 3 local varieties, viz., Shabuj, Kalo and Sitsite. The String Bean pods are light green, with light brown seeds having a white patch at one end. The pods of Shabuj look light green, and have seeds that are light brown. The pods of Kalo are whitish green having seeds that are black, and the Sitsite have pods that are chocolate in colour with whitish spots and the seeds are light brown. These varieties were replicated twice with 24 plants in each plot placed in a randomized block design. In the plot the plants were placed in two rows with row-to-row spacing of 3ft and plant-to-plant spacing of 2.5ft. The date of sowing was 31st August, 1968. Manures and fertilizers applied consisted of 100 maunds cowdung, 2 maunds and 25 seers triple super-phosphate, 1 maund and 35 seers urea and 1 maund and 35 seers muriate of potash, per acre. While cowdung and triple super-phosphate were applied before planting, the other two were used as top-dressing in two installments. Plants were weeded, mulched and irrigated from time to time in order to keep them in good growing condition. In order to measure the weight of the vines, the plants were pulled up ten day after the last picking.
