Evaluation and Development of Low-head Drip Irrigation Systems for Small Scale Farmers.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the suitability of a drip irrigation system which has been introduced recently in some places of Bangladesh by ARPA Engineering, Dhaka without any technical and economic evaluation to evaluate the performances of this system, a timber framework was conducted in the laboratory to support the drip lines at various land slopes (0-1.5%). A mini water tank having the capacity of about 100 liter water was placed on a wooden stand the height of which could be changed to achieve varying supply heads. The combined effects of water supply head, slope and lateral length on water distribution along the drip line were evaluated. Coefficient of variation (CV), emission uniformity (EU) flow variation (FV) and emitter discharge (Q) were computer. The computer values showed that for different heads and slopes Eu values are <70% and Fv values >20% which indicate that the performances of this drip system are very poor and would emit water non-uniformly along a drip line. This drip system will lead to either over irrigation or under irrigation along different section of a drip line and result in very low irrigation efficiency. As such a mini plastic discharging tube (2-5 mm dia) passing through the metallic nut engrave wooden ring with facility of screwing was developed to work as emitter (wooden tap). The tap was found very effective and suitable as emitter.

Objectives:

1. Construction of a experiment framework in the laboratory for evaluating the performance of the existing drip irrigation system. The effect of water supply head, land slop and lateral length on emitter discharge along with the drip line will be evaluated. 2. The Design parameters for an appropriate low-head drip irrigation system will be identified in order to design and develop a low-cost drip system using indigenous resource and skill.

Methodology:

A timber framework will be constructed in the laboratory to support the drip lines at various land slopes (0 ± 4%). A water bucket will be placed on a wooden stand the height of which will be changed to achieve varying supply head. To collect the emitted water catch cans will be placed along the drip line directly below the emitters. The combined effects of water supply head, slope and lateral length on water distribution along the drip line will be evaluated. Coefficient of variation (CV), emission uniformity (EU), flow variation (FV) and emitter discharge (Q) will be computed using the equations.The general performance of evaluation criteria a for EU values ≥ 90% and FV values ≤ 10% will be considered as excellent and acceptable. Appropriate water supply head, land slope, lateral length, emitter opening sizes along the lateral will be determined on the basis of the evaluation criteria. With the aid of experimental results a low-head drip irrigation system will be developed using locally available materials and skills a dn will be tested in the field for economic viability.
