Community Based Integrated Technology Investigation for Post Harvest Rice Processing for Improving Livelihood of Resource Poor Farmers.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study surveyed 62 farmers from four groups namely; those who did not use at all power thresher and mechanical dryer (Traditional farm-30), those who used only power thresher neither mechanical dryer (Semi-modern-II farm-12), and those who used both power thresher and/either mechanical dryer (Semi-modern-II farm-12), those who did use all the rice processing technologies such as power thresher and mechanical dryer (Modern-farm-10) for paddy processing system. Moreover, data on 30-power thresher and one STR-1 dryer operation were investigated to fulfill the objectives of the study. The survey was conducted during the January 2005 to June 2005 covering both aman and boro season in some villages of Fulbaria Upazila in Mymensingh district. The collected data were analyzed and placed as tabular form. Partial budgeting technique was applied to estimate the economic benefit to the users and project appraisal technique will be adopted to conclude the performance of the three types of devices in terms of benefit cost ratio, net present value and rate of return (IRR). Evidence showed that there were not large differences of age, educational level and farm sizes between owners and users of the devices for harvesting, threshing and drying of paddy. Two third of the user were 31-57 years of old and 50 percent of them were primary level of education. Eighty percent of the users were engaged primarily in agriculture. There were no large variations of land area among farming types but Semi-modern I farm posses the large farms compare to other types of farm. About 75% of the income of the users came from agricultural source while only 53% for the modern farms. A significant portion of the income of modern farm came out from off-farm employment. The adoption of the mechanical technologies positively related with the net change of rice income. Net change of rice income was the similar both for Traditional to modern farms or Semi-modern I farming system. The change of rice income from Tradition to Semi-modern II was only Tk. 786 per hectare. The cost of threshing and drying per quintal were respectively Tk. 22.36 and Tk. 36.03. The cost of firing wood, cost of diesel and labour costs constituted the major share of the total drying cost while the labour and diesel constituted the major share of threshing cost of paddy. A few problems raised by the farmers for using the processing technologies and these were: movement of paddy during drying; availability of electricity and heavy sound during operation of the engine for drying paddy.

Objectives:

1. To familiarize the devices for harvesting, threshing and drying in rice processing to the farmers. 2. To estimate the economic return through reducing harvest labor and post harvest losses of rice processing, and increased return for quality improvement. 3. To examine the profitability of investment on mechanical reaper, power thresher and dryer in rice processing system. 4. To investment the problems and constraints faced by the farmers for adopting the devices of rice processing system. 5. To suggest for polity implication.

Methodology:

To achieve the objectives, it has been planned to implement the project with joint collaboration of ASA and its informal group at village level and with technical assistance from the BAU, Mymensingh, post harvest operation of BRRI and RDRS workshop at Takurgaon. this project is mainly for paddy that difficult to dry especially in the rainy season due to cloudy weather. So , Boro season is the best time to conduct this research. At least one boro season need to be considered for better and conclusive findings/outputs.

Achievement/Findings:

Finally, the study strongly recommends for rapid extension of thresher and dryer technologies through government and non-government agencies for improving livelihood of the resource poor farmers.
