A Study on the Morphological Characters of Twenty Local Collections of Country Bean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was undertaken to assess the morphological characters and yield performance of 20 different collections/accessions of country bean. Significant variations among the materials with respect to opening of first flower. number of pods/plant, pod length and breadth and green pod yield were found. The accessions CB-14, CB-l5. CB-18. CB-5 and CB-7 took the shorter period (84-94 days) to flower. The earIy maturing accession CB-18 gave the highest green pod yield (14.5kg/plant) followed by CB-4 (11.6kg/plant), a medium late accession.

Objectives:

To evaluate morphological characters and yield performance of different accessions of country bean.

Methodology:

Twenty strains (six from Khulna, five from Jessore, three from Faridpur, two from Kushtia, two from Barisal and one from each of Patuakhali and Dhaka districts) were put into trial in the Central Research Station of BARI, Joydebpur, on August 18. 1983. The experiment was set up in RCB design with three replications. Pits were dugout and fertilized with 5 kg well rotten cowdung and urea, TSP and M. P @ 20 kg N, 40 kg P₂O₅ and 25 kg K₂O per hectare. The whole amount of triple super phosphate and muriate of potash and half of urea were applied during pit preparation and the rest half of urea was given 45 days after seed sowing. Pits were spaced 3m x 3m and five seeds were dibbled in each pit. One month after seedling emergence only the best and vigorous growing one was kept in each pit. Bamboo staking was provided to give support to the growing plants. Dimecron 5 cc/litre was sprayed every after 10 days to protect and control the aphids and other insects. Due to severe drought prevailing during the growing period five irrigations were provided from November to February. Data on plant growth, days required for first flowering, flower colour, pod shape and size, number of pods/plant, number of pods/inflorescence, green pod weight, and pod yield/plant were collected and analyzed statistically.
