Estimates of Genetic Parameters of Yield and Its Components in Watermelon

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic variation, broad sense heritability and expected genetic advance were studied in seven promising lines of watermelon (Citrullus Ianatus Thunb, Mnsf.) over three locations of Bangladesh. Most of the characters studied had high genetic variance and all the characters varied significantly across locations. The highest variety x location interaction variance was recorded for days to female flower and yield per plant. Broad sense heritability estimated were high for all the characters except fruit diameter. The estimates ranged from 58.91 per cent for fruit diameter to 91.38 per cent for days to female flower. The expected genetic advance in per cent of mean ranged from 5.63 to 84.78 for fruit diameter and number of fruits per plant. The days to female flower, number of fruits per plant, yield per plant and brix (%) had high heritability associated with high genetic advance in percent of mean which indicated that these characters could be improved through selection.

Objectives:

To estimate the genetic parameters for yield and its components.

Methodology:

The materials consisted of seven F₁ hybrids which were obtained through crossing of some American and Japanese varieties with Bangladeshi varieties.The entries were grown in three different geographical areas (Joydebpur, Rangpur and Hathazari) of Bangladesh during the cropping season of 1986- 87. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The unit plot size was l0.5m x 3m accommodating seven plants with the plant spacing of 1.5m in single row. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the experimental plot. Manures and fertilizers were applied @ 5 kg cowdung, 30g Urea, 40g TSP and 20g MP in each pit before seven days of transplantation. Urea and MP @ 20 and 25 g per pit, respectively, were applied thrice as top dressing first at 10 days after transplanting, second at the opening of first female flower and third at fruit formation stage. Each plot was mulched with rice straw and other intercultural operations were done as and when needed. Data on days to female flower, number of fruits, fruit length (cm), fruit diameter (cm), yield (kg) and brix (%) were recorded from five plants excluding two border plants. Varieties differed only for days to female flower, number of fruits per plant and brix (%). The variety x location interaction variances were significant only for days to female flower and brix (%). This shows that the location plays a great role in their determination. In other words, differences in location result in significant differences in the performance for these characters. The grand mean, range, coefficient of variation and the estimates of phenotypic variance, genotypic variance, genotype x location interaction variance and environmental variance for each trait are given.
