An open-pollinated radish line was isolated and improved through superior maternal line selection. It was then put to yield trials. The selected line produced 72 tons edible roots per hectare as compared to 64.5, 61.9 and 37.0 tons produced by the cultivars Minowase White Long, Miyashige Green Neck and Red Bombay respectively. The line bolted uniformly under field condition and produced 2.5 tons of viable seeds per hectare. The line was released by the National Seed Board as "Tasaki Mula".

To develop Tasaki mula, a high yielding radish cultivar through mass selection.

Eighty four open-pollinated radish lines/ cultivars obtained from japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China in 1978 were grown at the Central Research Station, BARI, Joydebpur. Their performance was observed with respect to growth habit, edible fleshy root quality and ability to produce seeds under field condition. Several lines such as Chinese Pink, Kana, Taiwan and Chinese radish 55 days were found promising. The line Chinese radish 55 days which was obtained from China through Chia Tai Seed Co. Ltd. Bangkok, Thailand appeared to be superior among these promising radish germplasms, But this line also showed variabilities with respect to edible fleshy root quality and bolting habit. Seeds of this Iine were produced in net house carefully under isolated condition in 1978-79. Out of 3651 plants only 38 desirable plants were isolated at the early bolting stage for seed production. Seeds of each plan' were preserved separately after harvest. In the Rabi season of 1979-80, these 38 first progenic lines were put under progeny test in order to isolate superior genotype(s) through phenotypic evaluation of individual plant. Out of 3800 plants of 38 progenic lines onIy 8 elite maternal plants and 37 semi-elite maternal plants were selected and planted together in isolation to cross freely in order to maintain the broad genetic base. Seeds collected from these 45 elite and semi-elite plants were sown in mid-October of 1980-81 rabi season for third progeny selection. Their physic-morphological characters and yield potential were noted. Selection of qualitative characters such as root shape, plant attitude, leaf characters, pithyness, branching, cracking of roots and bolting habit were done along with quantitative characters. In this third progenic test, 56 elite maternal plants and 112 semi-elite individuals were selected. These were planted together in isolation keeping elite materials in the centre so as to allow free crossing between elite and semi- elite materials. Seeds of elite and semi- elite plants were collected separately. In the rabi season of 1981-82, only one elite maternal line out of 56 was selected for uniformity. Seeds of this line were produced in isolation and designated as breeders stock, In the next year the selected Iine was put under regional yield trial at Joydebpur, Ishurdi and Rangpur. This was done in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3,cm x 1 cm in which 20 plants were spaced 30 cm x 50 cm apart. The physio-morphological characters of these lines were also studied along with some imported popular Japanese hybrid varieties and a local cultivar at Joydebpur in replicated RCB design. The performance of the selected line was evaluated in the same year by the Technical Committee of National Seed Board and subsequently, it was officially released by BARI through the National Seed Board in the year 1983 and named as "Tasaki Mula",
