Performance of Some Genotypes of Tomato in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on the performance of 36 genotypes of tomato was conducted at the farm of central research station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during the winter season of 1989-90. All the genotypes except TM0031, TM0051, Manik, TM0050 and TM004l were found dwarf in nature. The flower initiation was significantly earlier (38 days) in the genotype TM0015 than the other lines. The length and diameter of fruit were recorded maximum in TM0027 (7.83 cm) and TM0039 (7.54 cm), respectively, and lowest in TM006 (3.56 and 2.65 cm). TM0028 produced the maximum number of fruits per cluster (6.13) and least in TM0017 (2.93). Maximum number of fruits per plant was found in TM006 (117.12) and minimum in TM0038 (11.68). The individual fruit weight was highest in the genotype TM0039 (138.94 g) and lowest in TM0059 (19.73 g). The genotype TM0033 gave the highest yield (101.33 t/ha) followed by TM0029 (92.00 t/ha). A total of 19 genotypes were found promising for further testing.

Objectives:

To evaluate 34 tomato lines collected from abroad along with two check varieties for identifying high yielding varieties.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the farm of central research station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during October 1989 to March 1990. The Lines TM0006 and TM0007 were collected from the Philippines, the line TM0050 and TMOO10 from Thailand and Australia, respectively. TM0054 from Brazil and rest of the lines were collected from FAO, Rome, Italy. The varieties Manik and Ratan were used as checks. There were 36 treatments. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design replicated three times. The unit plot size was 3 m x 2 m accommodating 20 plants with a spacing of 60cm x 50cm. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the field on 11 November 1989. A basal dose of cowdung and TSP @ 10 tons and 450 kg per hectare, respectively, were applied during land preparation. Urea and MP @ 550 kg and 250 kg per hectare, respectively, were applied in three equal side dressings at 15 days interval starting 10 days after transplanting. Irrigation, weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The information on different characters were statistically analyzed and the means were compared by least significant difference test.

The results of the present investigation revealed that the genotypes TM0033, TM0020, TM0022, TM0015, TM0037, TM0051, TM0056, TM0007, TM0029, TM0034, TM0030, TM0054, TMOOll, TM0025, TM0006, TMOOI9, TM0028, TM0027 and TM0014 are promising for higher yield and also dwarf in nature and may be selected for further evaluation in different agroclimatic zones before recommending for the farmers.
