Effects of Date of Planting and Duration of Growing Period on the Yield of Carrot

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The roots of carrot continued to increase in size until harvested 135 days after sowing. For getting higher total yield and early yield the crop should be sown as early as possible in the rabi season. In the cultivar Nantes, harvesting of roots as baby carrots is possible 75 days after sowing.

Objectives:

To find out Effects of Date of Planting and Duration of Growing Period on the Yield of Carrot.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur during the rabi season of 1980-81. The carrot cultivar 'Nantes' was used in this experiment. Seeds were sown on four different dates, namely. October 15; November 15, December 15 and January 15. Harvesting was started after 75 days and continued upto 135 days at fortnightly interval. The experiment was laid out in the split-plot design using three replications with date of planting in the main plot and growing period in the sub- plots. Individual plots were 6 X 1.4 m, each accommodating 6 rows at a spacing of 23 cm, In the rows. seeds were sown thickly to ensure a good stand and the seedlings were gradually thinned until the the plants stood approximately 10 cm apart. The crop was fertilized with cowdung, urea, triple superphnsphate and muriate of potash at the rate of 186.55, 140, 175 and 116 kg per hectare respectively. Cowdung and triple superphosphate were applied at the time of land preparation and thoroughly mixed with the soil. Urea and muriate of potash were top dressed 40 days after seed sowing. The soil of the BARI farm is a sticky clay. The experiment was therefore conducted in the soil which was further improved by adding river sand. The crop was irrigated several times according to necessity. The effect of date of planting and duration of growing period was evaluated by number of leaves, length diameter . and weight of roots, percentage of damaged (cracked and rotten) roots and yield per hectare, Data were collected from 40 randomly selected plants in each plot.
