Influence of Height on the Physical and Mechanical Properties of Golla Cane (daemonorops Jenkinsiana)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The physical and mechanical properties of golla cane (Daemonorops jenkinsiana) have been studied at three height positions. The variation of the properties due to node and internode has also been determined. The moisture content increases gradually from the bottom to the top. The specific gravity, compressive strength and bending strength decrease along the culm height. It is found that the node and internode have no effect on most of the properties. The inverse correlation is found for physical properties with compressive strength.

Objectives:

To generate data-base information on golla cane (Daemonorops jenkinsiana) for its proper use as a raw material in the cottage industry.

Methodology:

Three representative golla canes were collected in September from the cane arboretum of the Bangladesh Forest Research Institute, Chittagong. Each cane culm was divided into three equal portions: bottom, middle and top. The physical properties, viz., moisture content, specific gravity and volumetric shrinkage were determined for the internode and node. The mechanical properties, like compressive strength, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity at three height positions were evaluated in green and air dry conditions. Compressive tests were carried out from the specimens, the length of which was four times of the diameter. The properties were evaluated with node and without node. The static bending tests were carried out according to the ASTM standard with a minor modification. The modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity were determined for loading at the node and in between the node.

Achievement/Findings:

The top portion of golla cane possesses higher moisture content and lower specific gravity. The bottom is the strongest in respect of compressive strength and modulus of rupture. Thus, the species may be used as frameworks for furniture, walking sticks and other purposes, where large diameter cane is needed.
