Effect of Preservative Treatment on Strength Properties of Mangium (acacia Mangium)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The variation of strength properties of mangium (Acacia mangium) wood treated with the CCA preservative has been studied. It is found that compression parallel to grain, tension perpendicular in radial face and shear parallel to grain in tangential face have been significantly affected by the treatment. The treatment causes reduction in modulus of rupture, stress at proportional limit in static bending and shear parallel to grain. All other strength properties are observed to increase from 3 to 81 percent by treatment.

Objectives:

To examine the effect of preservative treatment with CCA on the strength properties of mangium (Acacia mangium).

Methodology:

Five trees of mangium were collected from the arboretum of the Bangladesh Forest Research Institute, Chittagong. The age and girth of the trees were 12 years and 50-90 cm respectively. A pair of samples was taken from each bolt for determination of mechanical properties. Initially, The bolts were marked into 6.35 cm squares according to the standard sawing diagram and were sawn to 6.35 cm ´ 2.5 m sticks. The sticks were dried in a steam heated kiln to about 20% moisture content. These were then dressed to 5.08 cm ´ 5.08 cm ´ 2.5 m and the clear specimens to the size specified by the ASTM standards.One batch of samples was subjected to treatment with the CCA preservative by the full-cell pressure method. Another batch of samples was kept untreated. Both the types of samples were then dried to about 12% moisture level before carrying out the test. The specimens were tested in a screw power type universal testing machine in accordance with the specifications of the ASTM (1971).

Achievement/Findings:

Most of the strength properties of mangium wood are found to increase by treatment from 3 to 81 percent except the stress at proportional limit, bending strength and shear parallel to grain. Thus, the preservative treatment does not pose any serious problem in case of reduction of strength properties.
