Performance of Sweet and Mandarin Oranges in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on the performance of sweet orange and mandarin orange, was conducted at the Citrus Research Station of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute at Jaintiapur, Sylhet in the year 1973. The plants of mandarin orange group were generally taller than those of sweet orange group. The sweet orange varieties were earlier than the mandarin orange varieties, their mean flowering dates having been 27th February and loth March, and picking period, ranging from first week of October to first week of November, and last week of October to first week of December, respectively. The fruit of sweet orange group were generally tight-skinned and thou of mandarin orange group were loose-skinned. The fruits of sweet orange were, in general, sweeter, bigger and heavier than the mandarin oranges. Fruits of mandarin orange contained more seeds than the sweet oranges.

Objectives:

To know the differentiating characteristics of sweet and mandarin oranges grown in Bangladesh

Methodology:

Ten plants of each of eight varieties of sweet orange namely, Blood Red, Decibre, Jaffa, Mosambi, Pineapple, Ruby Red, Suckery and Washington Navel, and four varieties of mandarin orange, such as, Feutrell's Early, Khasia, Kinnow and Nagpuri, were used as the materials for the study. At the time of this study the plants were 9 years old. This study was limited to plant characteristics, the period of flowering and picking, the yield and the fruit characteristics of the two groups of oranges. For all practical purposes, the means of various tributes of representative samples of the different varieties were taken into account.
