Effect of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potash at Different Levels on the Size and Yield of Potato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment on potato manuring was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the year 1967-68, to find out the optimum levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash. The response of potato as measured by the size and yield of tuber to the different combinations of N ( 0, 60, 90 and 120 lbs/acre ), P₂O₅ (0, 60 and 90 lbs/acre ) and K₂O (0, 60 and 90 lbs/acre) was studied using the variety Eigenheimer. The combination of I20 Ibs N, 90 lbs P₂O₅ and 60 lbs K₂O per acre produced the maximum Grade-A tubers ( diameter of half of an inch and over) as well as the largest total yield.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash.

Methodology:

The work was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from October, 1967 to January. 1968. In the experiment, whole seed pieces of the variety Eigenheiroer were used. The size of the seed potatoes ranged from 1 to 1½ ounce by weight The seeds Were procured from Kotwali Thana Central Cooperative Association Cold Storage, Comilla. Three different fertilizers, namely, Urea ( 46% N), Triple Super Phosphate (46% P₂O₅) and Muriate of potash (60% K₂O) were used in this trial as the sources of nitrogen, phosphorus and potashium respectively. In addition to these, Cowdung manure at the rate of 100 maunds per acre was applied at the time of land preparation. To investigate the nutrient status of the soil. soil samples from the experimental area were chemically analysed. The soil was found to be rich in potash (7.90 mg available K₂O/100 gm ). medium in phosphorus (3.46 mg available P₂O₅/I00 gm ) and very low in nitrogen content (0.072% total N). The levels of N, P₂O₅and K₂O applied in different treatment combinations were as follows: N =0, 60, 90 and 120 lbs per acre P₂O₅ =0, 60 and 90 lbs per acre K₂O =0,60 and 90 lbs per acre. Thus altogether there were 36 different treatment combinations. The experiment was laid-out in a Complete Randomized Block Design with three replications. Individual plots measured 15" X 12". Triple Super Phosphate, Muriate of Potash and 1/3rd of Urea were mixed together and applied to the respective plots prior to the planting of the seeds. The mixtures of the fertilizers were applied in parallel bands on both sides of the plant rows at a distance of 2 to 3 inches and slightly below the levels of potato seeds. The remaining 2/3rds of Urea were applied on both sides of the plant rows on November 23, immediately before the first ridging. Seed pieces were planted on November 1, 1967 at a spacing of 9 inches in rows 2½ feet apart. The tubers were planted at a depth of 2 to 3 inches from the soil surface. Ninety six seed potatoes were accommodated in each unit plot. The crop received natural precipitation and needed no irrigation. It was harvested on January 26, 1968.

Achievement/Findings:

The yield (by weight) of Grade-A tubers per plot as affected by the interaction of N, P₂O₅ and K₂O was found to be statistically significant. The corobination of 120 lbs N, 90 lbs P₂O₅ and 60 lbs K₂O gave the highest yield of Grade-A tubers per plot. Zero pounds each of N, P₂O₅ and K₂O gave the lowest yield. The interaction had no significant effect on the yield of Grade-B tubers.
