Feed, Fodder and Forage During Normal and Stress Situation in the Farming Systems Research Site, Janokinathpur, Rangpur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey was conducted at the Farming Systems Research site, Janokinathpur, Rangpur during May 10 July, 1990 in four villeges namely Hatemur, Betasan DuroaPur, Nischintapur and Khanpur of Mithapukur upazila with the objectives to identify the existing cropping patterns and use of feed stalls, fodder and forage and to identify the abundance and stress period of feed, fodder and forage. Information were collected from 20 farmers with the help of questionnaire by direct interview technique. It was found that rice straw, rice bran, rice gruel, green grass, kitchen waste (vegetables ) and salt were the more existing conventionl feeds in the study areas. It revealed that the peak storage months of feeds, fodder and forage were during the Bengali months of Ashwin, Kartik and Chaitra. In the stress period the farmers used some non-conventional feeds such as molasses, maize (green plants and levels) green leaves (bamboo, mango. jackfruit, water hyacinth, 'khoksa' creeper and herbs.

Objectives:

1) To identify the existing status of feeds, fodder and forages.

ii) To identify the abundance and stress period of feeds, fodder and forages.

Methodology:

The survey was conducted during May to July, 1990 in four villages at Farming Systems Research site, namely Hatemur, Betasan-Durgaur, Nischintapur and Khanpur of Mithapukur upazila under Rangpur district. A total of twenty farmers, taking five farmers from each village having livestock were randomly selected and interviewed directly for collecting information with the help of survey schedule. Rangpur district and adjoining area belonging to agreocological zone. Tista meander flood plain, compromise of which Pirgacha, Polashbari and Gangachara soil occuring in high land and homestead. The villages of these study areas are situated at 25°35′ north latitude and longitude 89°15′ east and 13 12 meter high from the sea level. More than 200mm average rainfall was found in the month from May to September at Rangpur while remaining 7 months with rainfall less than 100mm except October.

Achievement/Findings:

It is evident from the study that a serious crisis of livestock feed prevails in flood affected areas due to the damage of field crop and submergence of grazing land. So, leguminous crops like cow pen, munqbean and kuesari should be incorporated to de designing tile future cropping system. This is provide additional fodder for livestock as well as organic matter content of the soil.
