Land Use Pattern in Non-saline Ganges Tidal Floodplain Area of Southern Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at the farming Systems Research Site Lebukhali, Patuakhali with a view to understanding the existing land use pattern in non-saline Ganges Tidal Floodplain Soils. One hundred farm households from different farm categories of the study area comprising three villages were selected by using stratified random sampling technique. The study revealed that the most common patterns ill medium high land and medium low land were Fallow- T. aman- Mungbean and T. aus - T. aman/grasspea which covered about 35% and 66% of the total area, respectively. The landless and marginal farmers cultivate more land as share cropper than the owned, while the small, medium, and large farmers cultivated less land in comparison with their owned land. The results indicate that landless and marginal farmers are mainly dependent on crop farming for their survival. For landless farm, each hectare of cultivated land supports 26 persons, while each hectare of land supports only 4 persons for large farm. The potential land use and future researchable areas for increasing production and income are identified as selection of suitable crop species to be grown in fallow land in winter season, selection of improved rice variety suitable for tidally flooded condition and determination of improved management practices for different crops grown in the area.

Methodology:

The study was conducted during November 1987 to March 1988 at the Farming Systems Research (FSR) site Lebukhali under Patuakhali district representing the non-saline Ganges Tidal Floodplain Soils. The FSR site consisted three villages, namely Lebukhali, Kartikapasha and Badarpur having 1932 households with a total population of 11630. Initially a list of all farmers from three villages was prepared and grouped into landless (<0.2 ha), marginal (0.21-0.50 ha), small (0.51-1.00 ha), medium (1.01-2.00 ha) and large (>2.00 ha) farmers according to size of own land holdings. The stratified random sampling technique was used for the study. A total of one hundred farm households were selected and the sample comprised of 38 landless, 28 marginal, 20 small, 10 medium and 4 large farmers. Data were collected by personal interview with the help of pre-tested interview schedule. Some of the plots were also visited to collect additional information. Tabular method of analysis was used to analyze the data. Secondary information influencing land use pattern was taken into consideration from the previous studies.
