Yield and Yield Component of T.aman Rice (oryza Sativa L.) Cultivars as Influenced by Seedling Age Under Tidal Non-saline Ecosystem

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In this study of seedling age on the yield and yield component of T-Aman rice cultivars. A field experiment was carried out in the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Patuakhali Science & Technology University, Patuakhali, Bangladesh under the Agro-ecological Zone 13 (Ganges Tidal Floodplain) during the July to December 2011. Experimental design was arranged in Randomized Block design with three replications. The primary factor of seedling age (30, 45, 60 days) and the secondary factor of rice cultivar (BRRI dhan44 & Local Lalmota) were considered. The hill mortality rate was higher in BRRI dhan44 than local Lalmota each seedling age. The utmost grain yield had been related to the 45 days seedling age among the seedling ages with 4.24 ton per hectare. Between the cultivars of the highest yield of the grain was produced in Local Lalmota cultivar with 4.56 ton per hectare. The excelled yield (4.69t/h) of the grain was produced under the counter effect of 2 factors for local Lalmota with 45days old seedlings.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum age of seedlings of a variety for a particular season and
Tto increase the yield per unit area through the use of optimum age of seedling and seedling raising techniques.

Methodology:

The research was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Patuakhali Science & Technology University, Dumki, Patuakhali, Bangladesh. The experimental field was locatedat 22°27.903/N latitude and 90°23.291/E longitude at an altitude of 03 meters above the sea level. The research area belongs to the non-calcareous clay soil under Agro-ecological Zone of the Ganges Tidal Floodplain (AEZ-13). The region covers several river borne sediments of silt. Three seedling age 30, 45 & 60 days respectively were tried on two T. aman rice varieties viz. BRRI dhan44 (V₁) & Local Lalmota (V₂), and layout system was randomized complete block design with three replications in a plot measuring 4 x 2.5 cm². The distance maintained between the unit plots and replication was 0.75 m and 1m, respectively. Fertilizers were applied to the experimental plots as per Fertilizer Recommendation Guide. All agronomic practices were adopted according to the common commendations for this crop. Data were collected following standard procedure. The grain yield was measured from one square meter area in each plot and were converted into tons per hectare. The sun-dried straw was weighed from the same sample area harvested for grain yield and converted into tons per hectare. Tidal water was measuring research field two time per day from transplanting to 38 days after transplanting. The biological yield was calculated using the following formula.

Harvest index was calculated on the basis of adjusted grain and straw yield using the formula:

Analysis of variance for different characters was done using MSTAT-C software. The treatment means were compared using Duncan¢s multiple range test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

The research concludes that that, BRRI dhan44 with 30days old seedling and the lowest hill mortality was found from local Lalmota with 60 days old seedling. The hill mortality rate was higher in BRRI dhan44 than local Lalmota. And finally local Lalmota obtained maximum grain yield at 45 day old seedlings in T. Aman season against the non-saline tidal ecosystem of southern area of Bangladesh.
