The study was conducted to identify the safe environmental parameters of confined poultry housing systems at farmers’ level under four selected districts in Bangladesh. The study also discussed the formulation of guidelines to design and develop environment-friendly and functional poultry housing systems for the rural areas. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected from 42 selected poultry farms of the districts through pre-tested interview schedules for identifying safe environmental parameters from engineering viewpoint. On the basis of birds, 45.2%, 33.33% and 21.43% of farms were small, medium and large respectively. The sites, insulating materials, lighting, cooling ventilation, water supply, litter disposal and management systems of the categorical farms were not ideal both from economic and environment-friendly poultry production for erected mostly alongside the road dispersedly located around the homestead. In summer the temperature of the sites varied from 28-34°C during day-time and 25-30°C at night, while in winter, the temperatures were 12-20°C during day time. The most efficient temperature of laying house should be 20-24°C. In rains, the humidity was 80-95% but in winter it was 55-68%. High humidity resulted in wet litter and increased disease prevalence. The ideal relative humidity for poultry should be 60-80%. All small farms we reusing natural ventilation system together with ceiling fans and majority of farm-owners used derelict pond for wastewater and dumping for dead body disposal. Poultry litters used as organic fertilizer, fuel and a few were kept in open yard for bio-degradation. Cleaning agents and disinfectants were found to use in small farms. Only few large farms used chemical agent for fly and pest control. About 60% farm owners used tin-shed with bricks at the end walls, 24% tin-shed with tin and 16% concrete roofing with bricks at end walls. The roof shapes of tin-shed poultry house were mostly gable types with some offset gables. About 50% farm owners used jute and splitted-bamboo mats and 29% jute-mat or sac as ceiling materials and 21% did not use any ceiling materials. The poultry farmers showed their keen interest for pre-fabricated elements of environmentally safe poultry houses so that they could by the elements from the market, assemble together to build the poultry house in the form of a package deal depending on their demand and budgets. This would allow the farmers to plan for constructing poultry houses shortly without incurring high initial investments for erecting any permanent structure with the proviso that the occupied lands be replaced for other important future usages. A number of guidelines were suggested for enabling the farmers to design and develop low cost, controlled and functional poultry housing system for profitable farming. This would foster the rural people to copy with the opportunity of income-generating sources from poultry enterprise contributing to national economy.

1. To identify and characterize the safe and environmental factors for confined poultry housing systems. 2. To design and develop an environmentally controlled and functional low-cost model poultry house for rural area. 3. To develop hygienic and economically viable compost preparation technique using the poultry litters.

The work will be started with routine visit of some selected commercial and small stakeholder’s poultry farms for collecting information of materials and equipments currently being used in the farms through pre-tested questionnaire. The effectiveness of the model farms will be estimated considering the safe environmental factors, suitability to establish in the rural areas, social acceptability to adoption of such farms etc. In furthering the work, a hygienic and economically viable compost preparation technique will be attempted using the solid wastes from the poultry farms (Rashid & Abedin, 1991). The effectiveness and utility of using organic fertilizer will be studied.

1. On implementation, the safe and environmental factors for confined poultry housing systems are precisely identified and characterized that provide guidelines in planning and designing commercial poultry house. 2. Environmentally controlled, functional and economically viable poultry houses are designed and developed from rural areas so that the farmers can easily start and look into the ways and means to inlay themselves towards an income-generating source from the poultry industries in the farm of a package deal for profitable farming. The farmers are updated with technical know-how to establish low cost, functional and environmental-control poultry houses. 3. A hygienic and economically viable compost preparation technique using the poultry litters are developed. Thus, a significant amount of money could be saved by using the organic manure prepared from poultry droppings and farm wastes instead of chemical fertilizer and this foster the rural people to cope with the opportunity of using environmentally safe organic fertilizer for boosting crop production contributing to national economy.
