Effect of Intermediate Stock on the Grafting Success and Growth of Scion Shoot of Mango Cv. Langra

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A grafting experiment was conducted using four varieties of mango viz. Lata Bombai, Baromashi, Amrapali and Golapkash as intermediate stocks while that of Langra and Satiarkara were used as Scion and rootstock, respectively, to assess the effect of intermediate stocks on the grafting success and growth of scion shoot. Results showed that intermediate stocks and significant influence on the growth of scion shoot of mango cv. Langra. Although Amrapali had the owest per cent success (940%) of grafts but it had a positive influence In controlling the growth of Scion shoot in respect of length (22.50cm), diameter (o.56cm) and number of leaves (16.50) per scion shoot after 100 days of grafting. The control i.e. grafting without the use of intermediate stock gave the highest per cent success (90%) of grafts and also took the least number of days (16.89) to bud break compared to grafts where Intermediate stocks were used.

Objectives:

To assess the effect of intermediate stocks on the growth of scion shoot.

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in 1993 at the Mango Research Station, Nawabganj. Langra and Satiarkara variety of mango. were used as scion and rootstock, respectively. Lata 30mbai, Baromashi, Amrapali and Golapkash were used as intermediate stocks for double grafting. The experiment was set up in RCBD with three replications. Stones of Satiarkara were sown in the nursery bed on June, 1992 and seedlings of uniform height and thickness were selected for the grafting operation. In the double grafting operation, the first operation was made between the scion shoot and intermediate stock, and the second was dome between the intermediate stock and rootstock by cleft and veneer method, respectively. The graftings were done on August 4, 1993. The observations were recorded on days taking to sprouting, percent success, length and diameter of scion shoot, number of leaves per scion shoot and lea area after 100 days of grafting operation.

Days to bud break was minimum (16.89 days) in Langra (control) followed by Amrapali (20.75 days) and (26.14 days) in Golapkash. Among different intermediate stocks, Golapkash gave highest percentage of grafting success (70%) which was followed by Lata Bombai and Baromashi (60%) and Amrapali (40%). The single grafting of Langra gave significantly highest percentage of success (90) in this respect.Use of intermediate stocks had significant influence on the growth of scion shoot of mango cv. Langra. The longest scion shoot length (36.67cm) was observed in the single grafting of Langra while minimum scion shoot length was recorded by the intermediate stock Amrapali. The intermediate stock, Baromashi produced the highest diameter of scion shoot (0.72cm) and leaf number per scion shoot (28.50) while lowest was produced by the intermediate stock Amrapali. The highest leaf area (24.20cm²) of scion shoot was obtained from the intermediate stock Lata Bombai which was followed by Amrapali (18.66cm²) and Baromashi (18.06cm²).From the above results, it may be concluded that the intermediate stock Amrapali had a positive influence in controlling the growth of scion shoot of Langra in the nursery.
