Comparative Study on Production Characteristics of Biomass, Nutritional Quality and Voluntary Intake by Cattle of Different Fodder Cultivars

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken to know the biomass production, nutritional quality and voluntary intake of different Napier cultivars in cattle, and to compare its digestibility and rumen degradability with other fodder. Two know digestibility, twenty six Pabna growing bulls (238.1±27Kg) were divided into 5 groups (containing 6, 6, 5, 5 and 4 bulls, respectively) and were supplied with one of the silages of Napier bazra, Napier hybrid, Napier arusha, plicatulum and local grass ad libitun, respectively to all feeding groups for a period of 60 days without any supplementation. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) in biomass production of Napier cultivars (46, 48 and 52 t/ha, respectively of Napier bazra, Napier hybrid, Napier arusha). The feed conversion ratio, digestibility of DM and nitrogen in forages did not differ (p>0.05). The highest DM digestibility was found in Plicatulum (55.34%) followed by Napier bazra (49.15%), Napier Hynrid (47.96%), local grass (41.46%) and Napier arushs (38.97%). The range of nitrogen digestibility was 38.3 to 62.9% (local grass and Napier hybrid, respectively). The feed conversion ratio (Kg feed/Kg gain) in different silage diets were 44.38, 42.06, 49.62, 23.74 and 23.23, respectively.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The study was undertaken to know the biomass production, nutritional quality and voluntary intake of different Napier cultivars in cattle, and to compare its digestibility and rumen degradability with other fodder. Land was prepared traditionally to cultivate Napier varieties. Basal doses of urea, TSP and MP were 50, 70 and 30Kg/ ha with a top dressing of 50 Kg urea / ha after each harvest at 60 to 70 days growth. Two know digestibility, twenty six Pabna growing bulls (238.1±27Kg) were divided into 5 groups (containing 6, 6, 5, 5 and 4 bulls, respectively) and were supplied with one of the silages of Napier bazra, Napier hybrid, Napier arusha, plicatulum and local grass ad libitun, respectively to all groups for a period of 60 days without any supplementation. Metabolic trial was lasted for 14 days with 7 days adjustment period and 7 days data collection period. Both feed, refusals and feces samples were analyzed for proximate composition. Data were analyzed for variances in a completely randomized design using SPSS. Means were separated by Least Square Difference.

Achievement/Findings:

There was no significant difference (p>0.05) in biomass production of Napier cultivars (46, 48 and 52 t/ha, respectively of Napier bazra, Napier hybrid, Napier arusha). The feed conversion ratio, digestibility of DM and nitrogen of Napier cultivars, Plicatulum, and local grass did not differ (p>0.05). The range of DM and nitrogen digestibility was 38.97% to 55.34% and 38.3 to 62.9%, respectively.
