Effect of Feeding Graded Level of Barringtonia Acutangula Fruits on Rumen Ph, Protozoa and Nh3-n in Growing Bull

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to determine the response of feeding Barringtonia acutangula fruits- a plant source of saponin in four rumen fistulated bulls. All animals received adlibitum urea molasses straw (UMS) along with a concentrate mixture at the rate of 1.0% of their live weight as the basal diet. Three animals were supplemented with Barringtonia acutangula fruits (oven dried at 60⁰C and grounded) either at a rate of 100 g/d or 150 g/d or 200 g/d mixing with concentrate and another one was fed a control diet (no herbal feed additive). The animals were fed with these four diet in rotation, i.e., after each five days of feeding experimental diets animals were kept control for ten days and again five days feeding period were started changing the diet to the animal in cyclic order. Rumen liqour samples were collected six times a day at 7:00am, 9:30am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, 4:30pm and at 8:30pm to determine diurnal variation in P^H, ammonia-N and protozoal concentration as affected by herbal sources. Samples were collected at day 3, 4 and 5 of the five days feeding period of treatment diet. The data showed that there was no significant effect on feeding Barringtonia acutangula fruits to cattle in respect of changing rumen p^H, reducing ruminal NH₃-N concentration and decreasing rumen protozoa count (P>0.05). On an average addition of 100 g fruits/d reduced ruminal NH₃-N by 7.57%, whereas 150 g/d and 200 g/d reduced NH₃-N by 3.4% and 1.7%, respectively than that of the control.

Objectives:

To determine the response of feeding Barringtonia acutangula fruits- a plant source of saponin in four rumen fistulated bulls

Methodology:

Four rumen fistulated bulls were used to determine the response of feeding Barringtonia accutangula fruits- a plant source of saponin. All animals received adlibitum (at least 10% in excess of requirement) urea molasses straw (UMS; 3% urea, 15% Molasses and 82% straw on DM basis) as the basal diet. They also received a concentrate mixture at the rate of 1.0% of their live weight. The concentrate allowance was divided into two halves and offered at 8.00AM and 3.00 P.M. The whole fruit of Barringtonia acutangula were dried in 60⁰C, ground and stored in air tight container. Three animals were supplemented with Barringtonia acutangula fruits either at a rate of 100 g/d or 150 g/d or 200 g/d mixing with concentrates and another one was fed a control diet (no herbal feed additive). The animals were fed with these four diet in rotation, i.e., after each five days of feeding experimental animals were kept control for ten days and again five days feeding period were started changing the diet to the animal in cyclic order. Achievement/Findings:
