Development of Commercial Feed Additive Mixture

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken to develop a commercial herbal feed additive mixture for fattening cattle and to determine its efficacy for boosting growth. Eighteen growing bulls were equally divided into 3 groups and were fed ad libitum UMS, supplemented with a concentrate mixture. Keeping one group control, the concentrate mixture of the other 2 groups was mixed either with BLRI developed “Herbamix A” or “Herbamix B”, at the rate of 1 g/kg live weight to each. The trial was continued for 90 days. On average 26.0 and 7.0% extra gain was harvested by Herbamix A and Herbamix B group, respectively. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was also improved in Herbamix A group. The FCR values for the animals under different groups were 10.1, 8.8 and 10.1, respectively for the control, Herbamix A and Herbamix B. On an average the animals of “Herbamix A” group consumed 1.3 kg less feed to gain 1 kg live weight to that of the control. Growth hormones used for feedlot beef cattle in the developed countries yield about 15.0% to 20.0% higher growth, and the effect of BLRI developed “Herbamix A” found in the present trial was much more than the hormone effects. However, extensive study to develop technology related processing, preservation and marketing of such products will be required.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Eighteen Bos indicus growing bull of almost similar age (about 3.0 years) were selected and randomly allocated to three experimental treatment having six bulls in each treatment. The experimental treatments were supplementation of either BLRI developed Herbamix A or Herbamix B and another one was the control (no herbal additive). All animals received adlibitum (at least 10% in excess of requirement) urea molasses straw (UMS; 3% urea, 15% Molasses and 82% straw on DM basis) as the basal diet. They also received a concentrate mixture at the rate of 1.0 % of their live weight. The concentrate allowance was divided into two halves and offered at 8.00AM and 3.00 P.M. Concentrate mixture was adjusted every week according to the change in their body weight. The animals were weighed fortnightly and UMS refusal was weighed every day to estimate daily intake throughout the experimental period of 90 days. Herbal feed additive (Herbamix A and Herbamix B) was fed mixing with concentrate at the rate of 1g DM/kg live weight. Weighed amount of herbamix was divided in two halves and supplied with concentrate. Nine animals were transferred to metabolic crates (3 animals from each treatment group) for determining nutrient digestibility and N balance. All animals were maintained individually to collect feces and urine. All samples were taken out from the freeze and thawed. After thawing seven samples of feces and refusal (7days) from an animal were mixed thoroughly, and a composite sample was taken for the determination of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) and crude protein (CP) on fresh basis. The other part of the sample was dried in an oven to determine acid detergent fibre (ADF). The data from growth and digestibility trial were analyzed using Complete Randomized Design (CRD) in SPSS-11.5 . Means were compared using Least Significant Difference (LSD) test where necessary.
