The present study measured the level of adoption of recommended package of technology for Uttara brinjal released by Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). Three Fanning Systems Research (FSR) sites or BARI from three districts such as Jessore, Chittagong and Pabna were the locale of the study Data were collected from 105 brinjal farmers of the three villages of three districts during the rabi season of 1995. Ten recommended practices were considered to measure the adoption level of the brinjal growers. The adoption level of Uttara Brinjal was much below than the expected. Only 20% of the farmers adopted Uttara variety. No practices of the recommended technology package were followed properly. Moreover, some of the practices were followed incorrectly. Among various reasons, lack of information about the variety and its production technology, non-availability of inputs (such as seeds, seedlings), less market demand etc., were responsible for its low adoption. There is a need for strengthening literacy education and extension work among the brinjal farmers.

3. To formulate some policy guidelines for wide adoption of the variety according to farmers' characteristics.

Three FSR sites of BARI situated in thee districts- Jessore, Chittagong and Pabna, respectively were selected for the present study. The justification of this selection was that these areas are highly concentrated with brinjal production and the farmers in this area are cultivating brinjal commercially. The random sampling technique was used to select ultimate sample for the study. A total of 105 brinjal farmers, taking 35 farmers from each site were chosen. Before selection of the sample. a complete list of brinjal farmers in these areas was prepared by the help of Block Supervisors of DAE. Necessary data were collected from sample farmers through personal interview using structured and pre-tested interview schedule during rabi season of 1995. A total of ten BARI recommended practices for Uttara brinjal cultivation were kept in consideration to measure the level of adoption. The recommendations included pertinent technical information from planting to harvesting of the crop. These practices were planting time: age of seedling: spacing, seed rate: use of cowdung, use of urea, use of TSP, use of MP, use of pesticides and use of irrigation water. The level of adoption was measured by computing adoption scores for recommended practices. In this case, only the farmers cultivating Uttara brinjal in three consecutive rabi seasons such as 1993, 1994 and 1995 were considered score given to each practice varied from 1 to 4 according to the adoption of the suggested package of technologies. A respondent farmer could get a score of 4 for adopting cent percent of practices for a given length of time. Hence, the possible total score earned by a farmer was equal to the number of practices used, multiplied by 4. i.e. maximum score could, therefore, be 40. On the other hand, farmers could receive a score of 3 for 75% adopting and 2 for 50% adopting, respectively. The mean score became the index of level of adoption of the recommended practices. Based on the score earned by the farmers, they were categorized as high, medium, low and very low adopters, respectively.

From the preceding discussions, it appears that the level of adoption of Uttara brinjal was much below than the expected. The farmers did not follow specifically any recommended package of technology for cultivation of the variety. Besides, most of the practices were followed incorrectly. There were some factors like younger age (average age 32 years), level of education and knowledge on brinjal cultivation, high production and market demand, good taste that were responsible for higher adoption. On the other hand, most non-adopting farmers claimed that they were not familiar with the new variety as well as its technology packages. Moreover, lack of seeds and seedlings were also found as barrier to the adoption. Like other HYVs, the farmers also mentioned it not as tasty as compared to other local variety which ultimately had bad effect on market demand as well as market price.
