To achieve the objectives a total of 15 RCC bulls of four age groups were dewormed and distributed in four groups and the age groups were 9-10, 15-16 , 21-22  and 27-28 months having mean live weights of 57.75, 86.40, 112.00 and 160.00 kg, respectively. Results obtained in the present study revealed that the total DM intake/ 100 kg body weight was significantly higher in 15-16 months age group of animals followed by 9-10, 21-22 and 27-28 months age group, respectively. The CP intake (g/day) was significantly (p<0.05) higher in 27-28 months age group and the lowest in 9-10 months age group. The average body weight gain (g/day) was significantly higher in 27-28 months age group and the lowest in 9-10 months age group of bulls. The LSD values indicated that FCR didn’t differ significantly among 9-10, 15-16 and 21-22 months age groups. Findings so far obtained it may be concluded that though the daily body weight gain was higher in 27-28 months age group but its required more feed to convert weight gain, on the other hand, age groups 9-10, 15-16 and 21-22 months showed better feed conversion ratios.

The main objectives of the project was to compare the meat yield, meat quality related parameters both RCC and Brahman crossbred bulls under similar plane of nutrition. Due to delayed hand over of Brahman crossbred bulls, the present study was undertaken to determine the differences in intake and growth performance of different age groups of RCC bulls.

Experimental animals, housing and feeding experimental diets

Red Chittagong bull available in the cattle research farm of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI), Savar, Dhaka were selected according to their age records, and based on the availability of animals four age groups (9-10 Months, 15-16 Months, 21-22 Months and 27-28 Months) having four animals in age group 9-10 months, 5 animals in group 15-16, 3 animals in both groups 21-22 and 27-28 months were distributed. The fifteen animals were housed in a double raw face out research shed of the farm and having facilities for feeding, watering and refusal collections from individual animals and treated with deworms at the begging of the experiments.  Animals were fed Napier silage for the first 2 months of experiment and followed by Napier green grass for another one month. Animals were supplied concentrate mixture @ 1 per cent of their respective body weight. Silage/green grass and concentrate mixture were offered twice daily in the morning and evening. About 15% additional amount of silage/green grass to that required daily for an animal was always made available to ensure adlib feeding, and the supply of concentrate mixture to an animal was adjusted with the increase of its live weight.

Body weight measurement

All the experimental bulls were weighed initially just after arrival in the experiment and weekly thereafter by a platform digital balance with an weighing range 0.00 kg to 1000 kg and a minimum graduation of ± 0.1 kg.  Each bull was weighed before morning feeding. The total live weight gain was calculated by subtracting the initial weight from the final weight taken at the experimental period and the daily weight gain was calculated by dividing the total weight gain by the number of experimental days. The experiment was carried out for a period of 90 days.

Feed intake estimation

The daily feed intake was measured by subtracting the amount of refusals from the amount of feed offered in the previous day. During feeding trial, the total intake i.e., the actual intake of silage/green grass and concentrate mixture fed by the animals were recorded on daily basis.

Proximate analysis of experimental diets

During feeding trial, representative samples of silage/green grass and concentrate mixture were chemically analyzed for dry matter, organic matter and crude protein. The acid detergent fibre (ADF) was determined.

Statistical analysis

Data were subjected to analysis by using analysis of variance for a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Treatment means were compared by using LSD. All the analysis was carried out using SPSS programme.

The results so far obtained, it may be concluded that though the daily body weight gain was higher in 27-28 months age group but its required more feed to convert weight gain, on the other hand, age groups 9-10, 15-16 and 21-22 months showed better feed conversion ratios. The findings of this experiment will be utilized for meat yield, meat quality, grading, commercial cuts and its preservation quality of RCC & Brahma crossbred bulls
