The study attempted to i) determine the extent of problem confrontation of the farmers in using country plough for paddy cultivation; ii) determine and describe the eleven selected characteristics of the fanners; and iii) to explore relationships between the problem confrontation of the farmers in using country plough and their selected characteristics. Data were collected form 100 farm families in three selected villages of Parshuram alarm under Feni district namely, Kolapara, Solia and Anantapur. To measure the extent of problem confrontation, Problem Confrontation Index (PCI) was developed. The PCI of six selected problems ranged form 240 to 299 against a possible range of 0 to 300, The PCI revealed that the top three items of problems were i) 'Longer time is needed for tilling' (300), ii) 'Required more physical labour' (299) and iii) 'Much time and labour is needed to plough in distant places' (289). However, the indices of problem items in the remaining two exceeded 250 and only one below 250. Overall problem revealed that 69 percent of the farmers faced high, 27 percent medium and 4 percent low problem. Out of eleven independent variable only one namely, The use of country plough in tilling land for paddy cultivation' had negative significant relationship with the problem confrontation of the farmers. Though not significant computed 'r' value in respect of 'use of power tiller in tilling land tbr paddy cultivation' was high with a positive trend while 'material possession' showed a negative trend.

The present study included the following specific objectives:

  1. To determine the extent of problem confrontation of the farmers in using country plough for paddy cultivation;
  2. To determine and describe the eleven selected characteristics of the farmers: and
  3. To explore the relationships between the problem confrontation of the farmers in using country plough and their selected characteristics.

Three villages namely Kolapara, Solia and Anantapur of Parshumin thaw under Feni district were the locale of this piece of research where, 287 farmers (who had operational land with at least a pair of bullock) lived, Thus. 287 fanners constituted the population of this study. In order to have a sample, 35 percent of the farmers were selected by proportionate random sampling method from each village. Thus. 100 fanners constituted the sample of this study. Data were collected through interview schedule in January-February 1998.

Tilling by country plough has been a major activity in paddy cultivation. Yet, farmers have been facing many problems related to this operation. Country plough operation is time consuming and laborious thus, more often unable to maintain timeliness of titling. There are also non-availability of healthy draught cattle in peak demand. Majority of the farmers of the study faced high problem in tilling land by country plough but, the traditional minded farmers who were accustomed with the use of country plough unable to distinguish problems related to this operation. Therefore, farmers' knowledge and skill related to both traditional and improve mechanical tilling and the scope of their alternative use need to be increased through agricultural engineering extension activities to bring a desirable change in tilling activities. Besides country plough problems, it is anticipated that except the rich and advantageous farmers country plough might be used by the large majority in the foreseeable future. Under this circumstances the present study lead to the following recommendations:

  1. Rearing healthy draught cattle and bringing power tiller through wealthy farm families might be some kind of answer to handle draught power shortage and timeliness of tilling operation. As, there is a dearth of extension agencies who can properly guide the farming community in matters of tilling either by ,fraught power or power tiller, the agricultural engineering extension agency shoed have to be included in the agriculture sector to balance between these two types of power.
  2. Upbringing of healthy cattle. suitable modified country plough and agriengineering entrepreneureships have to equally emphasise and this needs to develop   private organization and workshops at least at the !liana headquarters all over Bangladesh with the help of local agricultural development societies.
  3. Cattle ownership among the farm families is not uniform and power tiller is only owned by rich fanners. Thus. to ensure proper utilization of these power sources in tilling all categories of farmers should be organized into some kind of tilling societies.
