Community Based Sheep Production in Hilly Area at Naikhonchari.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken to establish the sheep rearing system at hilly region at Nikhonchari. The study was conducted at BLRI regional station, Nikhonchari, Bandarban. At starting period, a total of 40 ewes and 10 rams of native sheep (4 ewes and 1 ram of each) were distributed to selected community farmers’ level and remaining 16 ewes and 4 rams are being reared at regional station research farm. The socio economic status of selected farmers and productive and reproductive performances of native sheep at farm and community level was studied. The study shows that, the community farmers’ income increases from 3000- 22,000/- in the last year. It may be concluded that, in the community level, the BLRI native sheep is being well adapted.

Methodology:

At starting period, a total of 40 ewes and 10 rams of native sheep (4 ewes and 1 ram of each) were distributed to selected community farmers’ level. The remaining 16 ewes and 4 rams are being reared at regional station research farm. In the research farm all the sheep are housed by slated floor raised above the ground level with sufficient space. As diet, green grass (adlibitum basis, twice daily morning and evening) and concentrate feed (@ 200g per head per day) is supplying to the animals. The community farmers used wooden stall as night shelter using no bedding materials and rear their sheep only through scavenging system with a very few concentrate feed. Phenotypic, productive, reproductive and disease data was recorded regularly for farm and farmers’ level. Rams were kept separately from ewes to avoid unplanned mating. Birth weight of new born lamb was taken with digital balance within one hour and the subsequent weights were recorded in the morning and before feeding up to fortnightly throughout the year.
