Pure Line Selection of Local Mala for BARIsal Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was carried out to increase Aus production in Barisal region through varietal improvement.Panicles of local Mala called Mala IRRI were collected from farmers` field of Bakerganj, Barisal. Among the collected panicles, best ten were selected for pure line selection. To compare the local Mala ith BR2 and BR12, these varieties were grown at the same day with selected panicles. Panicles were collected during Aus season and head to row selection was done cultivation was done for purification in consecutive Boro season at West Baid, BRRI HQ, Gazipur. It was assumed that local Mala was developed by out crossing from BR2 but we found different morphological characteristics between local Mala and BR2. Among the tested lines HRP (Mala)-7-10 was found best considering agronomic and yield characteristics. Seeds of this line were harvested carefully for using in upcoming T. Aus season at Barisal region.
