Fertilizer Usage Pattern on Winter Vegetables: an Identification of Farm Level Data of Jessore and Rangpur Districts

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To document the existing fertilizer usage pattern of winter vegetables, a survey was conducted at Jessore and Rangpur during 1994-95 crop season. Eight winter vegetables, namely brinjal, cabbage, cauliflower, radish, tomato, country bean, spinach and potato were included in this study. The study reveals that farmers have been using fertilizers in irrational and indiscriminate ways. Majority of the farmers at Rangpur used higher quantities of cowdung for vegetables cultivation but most of the farmers used chemical fertilizers over recommended doses at Jessore. Majority of the farmers top dressed TSP and MP with urea at Jessoe compared to that of Rangpur. Among all the selected vegetables, highest quantity of fertilizers was applied for brinjal at Jessore (5 times more than recommendation) followed by cabbage and cauliflower. Most of the sampled farmers have poor knowledge regarding efficient fertilizer management and recommended fertilizer doses. Farmers generally applied fertilizers by their own experience and consulting with other neighboring farmers and fertilizer dealers. Only 14% and 5% farmers practiced green manuring and compost although 36% and 10% know the usage respectively.

Objectives:

(a) To find out kind of fertilizers used, doses, usage pattern in different winter vegetables;

(b) To document the farmers' knowledge about fertilizer usage in vegetables; and

Methodology:

In the present study, five villages around Churamonkati and Haibatpur union of Sadar thana under Jessore district and three villages around FSR site of Mithapukur thana under Rangpur district were purposively selected, where winter vegetables were cultivated intensively. Through random sampling technique, 170 and 156 farmers, who grow potato, brinjal, tomato, cabbage, cauliflower, radish, country bean and spinach, were selected from Jessore and Rangpur district, respectively. A number of sampled farmers for respective vegetables were selected proportionately. The sampled farmers were being interviewed with an objective-oriented pre-designed interview schedule during January to April 1995. The collected data were coded, edited for processing and analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data and presented in tabular form.

Achievement/Findings:

It was found that farmers have been using fertilizers in irrational and indiscriminate ways. A considerable number of farmers top dressed TSP, MP and gypsum (with over doses than recommended) in vegetables. This should be checked by improving farmers' knowledge about fertilizer management through short-term orientation or training programme, circulating leaflets and broadcasting through national media. Researchers must pay more attention to find out actual fertilizer doses required for vegetables in that locations considering farmers' practice and soils. Less usage of organic manure (especially at Jessore), which reduced soil health, should be taken into consideration. This situation might be improved by practicing green manuring. So prgramme should be taken to increase farmers' interest to practice green manuring. Higher price (especially TSP), price fluctuation and shortage (sometimes) of fertilizer should be improved by eliminating all sorts of administrative control from fertilizer marketing, and fertilizer should be sold through open market competition (like present situation). Creation of buffer stock at thana/district level by DAE personnel can help avoid, unexpected price fluctuation due to supply crisis. Quality of different fertilizers should be protected by taking action through Government authorized committee consisting of research and extension personnel at national level as well as district level.
