As a response to the production need for shrimp, natural shrimp fry are caught along the coastal region of Bangladesh. People including fishermen, landless, poor women and children are involved in fry collection as well as its trade. In respect of shrimp fry collection, fry collectors are mostly below 15 years of age in Chittagong-Cox's Bazar areas whereas, they are nearly about 20 years of age in rest of the areas. About 30 % of the fry collectors are female population. Most of the collectors earn daily income Tk. 33 to Tk. 45 during their 6 months involvement period of fry catching. On the other hand, fry trading is a seasonal occupation in coastal region. Income of fry traders is higher in Khulna areas than that of Chittagong due to high price, but the shrimp fry are more abundant in Chittagong-Cox's Bazar areas.

To study  the socioeconomic status of shrimp fry collectors and traders.

Shrimp producing areas in the coastal region of Bangladesh, greater Khulna and Chittagong-Cox's Bazar areas were taken as sample areas for this study. Two draft survey schedules (for shrimp fry collectors and fry traders) were prepared in conformity with the aims and objectives of the study. Pretesting was conducted with the draft schedules and the final schedules were prepared on the basis of results of the pretest.Primarily on the availability of shrimp seed in the coastal rivers, 19 thanas were selected for data collection. The selected thanas were- Shamnagar, Kaligonj, Asashuni and Sadar thanas from Satkhira district; Koira, Paikgacha and Dakop from Khulna district; Mongla, Moralgonj and Rampal from Bagerhat district; Motbaria and Kuokhali from Pirojpur; Charfashion from Bhola; Baskhili from Chittagong; Taknaf, Mohaskhali, Chokoria, Kutubdia and Sadar thana from Cox's Bazar district. Data about shrimp fry collectors and traders were collected by the trained investigators through direct interviewing during the months of January to June in 1992. Data collected covered a wide range of information relating to personal information of fry collectors, availability of shrimp fry, price and income of both fry collectors and traders. Shrimp fry collectors were selected randomly interviewed at the river sites during high and low tides period. As the fry collectors working along the coastal rivers, so it was only possible to interviewing the people close to thana headquarters. Shrimp fry collector population are mainly children, sometime information were obtained from group discussion. Fry traders were interviewed at the farm sites and fry markets. The survey work was conducted from the Brackishwater Station, Paikgacha, Khulna of Fisheries Research Institute. After collection of data from the study areas the first step was to scrutinize the data of each and every schedule. After completing the pre-tabulation task actual tabulation work was started. A list of tables was prepared on the basis of the aims and objectives of the study. Based on the objectives of the study, the analysis of the findings of the study concentrated mainly on i. demographical and socioeconomical characteristics, and ii. problems arising during fry collection and trade. In most cases, the simple tabular form of analysis was used. Finally, tabulated data were analyzed and presented by using average. percentages. combinations etc., to obtain the results.

The farm owners, apart from controlling the price of the shrimp fry, does not pay up at once. The traders have to make several trips to realize their money. On the other hand, the traders have to pay the catchers immediately. They can not buy on credit, because the catchers sell only for cash. The shrimp fry trading therefore needs some initial investment. Although the source of the capital in most cases, is non-institutional as reported by the traders. Money is also needed to buy equipment to keep the fry alive and transport it. Besides the cash capital, the fry traders had to put in physical labour as well. Shrimp fanning being seasonal, the fry traders went in for other lines of business as well and the shrimp fry trade proved more profitable than others.People including fishermen, landless, poor women and children are involved in fry collection as well as its trade. In respect of shrimp fry collection, fry collectors are mostly below 15 years of age in Chittagong-Cox's Bazar areas whereas, they are nearly about 20 years of age in rest of the areas.
