Participation of Rural Youth in Selected Household Activities in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The participation of rural youth (15-25 years) on selected household activities, eg., shopping and marketing, creating of crops and farmland, cleaning and supervision of homestead, nursing sick family members, attending guests and relatives, contacting physicians and procuring medicines, social activities of the family, repairing own home, and attending offices for family interest to evaluate characteristics of rural youth. A total of 391 rural youth families with 588 rural youth were selected at three selected villages, namely, Kakonhati (iswarganj), Kazirshinfla (Trisha) and Rangchapra (Bhaluka) in Mymensingh district. In this research, it was determined the participation of rural youth in household activities with their indices and rank order, and find out the relationship between the characteristic of rural youth and their participation. Significant positive relationship was found in education and aspiration in life, and significant negative relationship was found in earning stutas with the participation of rural youth in household activities.

Objectives:

To study the selected characteristics of rural youth
To determine the extent of participation by the rural youth in selected household activities and
To explore the relationships between the selected characteristics and participation.

Methodology:

The sample size was 391 rural youth families with 588 rural youth aged between 15-25 years in three selected villages of Mymensingh district. (Kakonhati (iswarganj), Kazirshinfla (Trisha) and Rangchapra (Bhaluka). As a first step 35% rural youth families were selected by proportionate random method from each of the 3 villages. Then one male rural youth was selected at random from each of the families. Thus 137 rural youth constituted the sari le, Date were collected during December 1993. Participation of rural youth was measured by 10 selected household activities. A 3-point Likert type scale was used. Score of a respondent in the participation of 10 household activities could range from 0 to 20. The score for three kinds of responses namely, No, Occasional and Regular with weights assigned for each of these responses were 0, 1 and 2 respectively. Based on the participation scores, youth were classified into four categories darnel y, no, low, medium and high participation. For clear understanding of each of the selected activities an rank order participation Index (PI) was developed.

Age, educational status, agricultural knowledge, leadership, cosmopoliteness, socio-economic ststus of family, farm size of the family, family income, earning Stratus, aspiration in life, ability to cope with uncertainly attitude towards technology were the independent variables. The participarion of rural youth in selected household activities was the dependent varieble.

Achievement/Findings:

The rural youth who have better education and higher level of aspiration in life, would normally think for the economic upliftment and overall development of their families. Youth with higher education and aspiration are more serious individuals than other youths. They are more suspective to new ideas in agriculture. These youth have a clear goal and assure obedience to their parents and willing to help them at home. Hence, they have higher participation in household activities. Whereas rural youth who are wage earners, farm labourers and have some kind of cash earning, do not participate in household activities, mostly because they are away from household and do not find time to stay at home, Youth programme planners and extension agencies should, therefore, identify, different youth client groups with their different socioeconomic situations and prepare youth programmes accordingly. It would be necessary to involve all categories of rural youth in youth programmes for self-employment as well as for their overall improvement.
