Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This paper focuses the species diversity, geographical distribution, morphology and meristic traits, stock/races. abundance, distribution and migration pattern of the river shad. Tenualosa ilisha (Clupeidae: Clupeiformes) in Bangladesh. The morphological and meristic characteristics of other two versatile clupeids. viz. T. toli and Hilsa kelee are also described. The morphological variation in T. ilisha might occur due to phenotypic variability and environmental influences.

Objectives:

To phenotypic variability and environmental influences.

Methodology:

The study is based on the analysis of information and data obtained by Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRl). Riverine Station. the review works of different authors and the reports of different organizations engaged in managing hilsa resources in Bangladesh. The measurements of morphometric and counting of the meristic characters of T. hilisha were done from the specimens collected from Chandpur, Aricha, Khulna, Patuakhali, Ramgoti and Chittagong. which representing the rivers of the Meghna, the Padrna, Rupsa, Anderrnanik, the Meghna estuary and the sea during July 2002 - June 2004. From each station at least 20 T. ilisha specimens were collected for the study during the investigation period. Random samples of T. ilisha were collected directly from the fishers or from local markets. Fish from local markets were only taken where the site of capture was known. Once purchased. fish were iced. transported to the laboratory and stored until analysis. Forty specimens of T. tali were investigated those were collected from Ramgoti and Chittagong. Usually T. tali and H. kelee are not abundant in the river systems. however. a little amount of those species are sometimes found in coastal region. Therefore. five specimens of H. kelee from Ramgoti and other five specimens preserved in the Hilsa Museum of Riverine Station at Chandpur of BFRl during 1986-2000 were also taken into account for the study.From each specimen 26 morphometric characters. viz. sex attributes. body shape (lateral). cross section. dorsal head profile. type of eyes. type of mouth snout. position of mouth. position of notch. fin. fronto-parietal striae. scales position. color. spots. size of fish. total length (TL). standard length. fork length. pre-anal length. pre-dorsal length. pre-pelvic length. pre-pectoral length. body. depth. head length (HL). eye diameter. pre-orbital length. and aspect ratio of caudal fin were measured and 11 meristic characters. viz. lateral lines. scales on body sides. belly scutes, barbels, dorsal fin. adipose fin. caudal fin. anal fin. pectoral fin. pelvic fin and gill racker were counted.
