Survey of the Nutrient Status of the Areas Under Tea in Balisera Valley Circle of Sylhet Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The survey was carried out in the sixteen tea estates of Balisera valley circle to find out the correlation between the yield of tea and soil properties of the existing tea gardens of Balisera valley circle in Sylhet region during 1963-73. A total of 93 soil samples were collected and analysed for mechanical separates, total nitrogen, lime, magnesia, potash, phosphate, pH, organic carbon, total organic matter, available phosphorus and available potassium. The results showed that loss of organic matter and the associated nitrogen contents of the have been identified as the major cause of poor growth, low yield and failure of the replanted tea to produce the expected results. 0.003% of available phosphorus and 0.0126% of available potash in the surface soil may be regarded as minimum standard figures for good tea soils of Balisera circle. For low grade soils the requirement may be less. These figures may serve as useful guide for the tea estate to decide upon the manuring programme with respect to application of phosphorus and potash.

Objectives:

To find out the correlation between the yield of tea and soil properties of the existing tea gardens of Balisera valley circle in Sylhet region

Methodology:

Sixteen tea estates of Balisera valley circle were surveyed. Each unit in the survey consisted of 500 acres or less depending on the size of an estate. Soil samples were drawn for analysis from each location at 0-9", 9-18"and 18-36" depths and thus 93 soil samples were collected. All the soil samples were air dried and processed. The samples were analysed for mechanical separates, total nitogen, lime, magnesia, potash and phosphate were determined. Cambridge pH meter was used for the determination of pH in soil water ratio 1:5. Organic carbon was estimated by wet oxidation method and total organic matter by ignition. Available phosphorus and potassium were determined. The particulars regarding the age, yield etc. of the tea was collected from the estates and topography, vacancy etc. were assessed in the field during survey.

With the increase in age of the tea sections, vacancy increases and the yield/ac decreases appreciably. Over long years of cultivation the soils have considerably suffered from erosion and loss of organic matter and the associated nitrogen. The loss of organic matter and the associated nitrogen contents of the have been identified as the major cause of poor growth, low yield and failure of the replanted tea to produce the expected results. In some cases high C/N ratio has been the limiting factor for satisfactory growth and yield. Most of the soils are poor in calcium to the extent that it may be necessary to replenish the loss during replanting. 0.003% of available phosphorus and 0.0126% of available potash in the surface soil may be regarded as minimum standard figures for good tea soils of Balisera circle. For low grade soils the requirement may be less. These figures may serve as useful guide for the tea estate to decide upon the manuring programme with respect to application of phosphorus and potash.
