Locally developed twenty one single cross maize hybrids along with three checks BHM9, BHM7 and C-6485 were assessed genotype environment interaction (GEI) and stability at five environments in Bangladesh during rabi, 2013-14. The AMMI model (additive main effects and multiplicative interaction) was used to assess the additive and multiplicative effects of the interaction. Significant variation for genotypes (G) and environment (E) were found for all the characters. It was evident that all the genotypes showed different response of adaptability under different environmental conditions. Considering the earliness, plant and ear height, yield and stability parameters, among the hybrids T8 (E34×E16), T9 (E39×E17), T13 (E39×E35) and E18 (E28×E16) may be selected for large plot observation trial but T1 (E21×E20) could not selected due to poor husk cover though it was highest yielder.

To assess the stability of some locally developed maize hybrids in the environments under subtropical climatic conditions like Bangladesh by using AMMI analysis.

The experiment was conducted at Hathazari, Jessore, Jamalpur, Ishwardi and Rahmatpur during rabi 2013-14. Twenty one locally developed single cross maize hybrids along with three checks namely BHM9, BHM7 and C-6485 were evaluated in this study. Experimental seeds were sown at Hathazari on 28 November, Jessore on 9 December, Jamalpur on 24 November, Ishwardi on 22 November and Rahmatpur on 21 November 2013. Experimental design was alpha lattice with three replications. The unit plot size was maintained at 5.0 m × 1.5 m. Spacing was 75 cm × 20 cm between row to row and hill to hill, respectively. All intercultural operations and fertilizers were applied as recommended doses. Data on days to tasseling, days to silking was recorded on whole plot basis. Ten randomly selected plants were used for recording observations on plant and ear height. All the plants in two rows were considered for plot yield. The grain yield (ton ha-1) data was assessed and corrected to 12% moisture. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used and the GE interaction was estimated by the AMMI model using Cropstat 7.2 program.

The mean sum of squares for the genotypes was highly significant for days to tasseling, days to silking, plant height, ear height and yield. Environmental mean sum squares were highly significant for all the character studies.Eleven genotypes showed positive pi index while rest 13 showed negative pi index for 50% tasseling date. The bi and s2di values range for days to 50% tasseling were 0.63 (T22) to 1.27 (T9) and 0.07 (T4) to 8.7 (T11) respectively. The genotypic mean ranged for days to 50% silking 88.53 (T12) to 96.20 (T22). Thirteen genotypes showed positive pi index while rest 11 showed negative pi index for 50% silking date. The bi and s2di values range for days to 50% silking were 0.68 (T13 & T22) to 1.26 (T15) and 0.24 (T17) to 7.37 (T11) respectively. The genotypic mean ranged for yield 8.47 (t/h) (T10) to 11.54 (t/h) (T1). Eleven genotypes showed positive pi index while rest 13 showed negative pi index plant height. The bi and s2di values range for yield were 1.70 (T10) to 1.37 (T1) and 0.45 (T22) to 1.35 (T16 & T19) respectively.The AMMI biplot provide a visual expression of the relationship between the first interaction principal component axis (AMMI component 1) and as well as relationship of IPCA1 and IPCA2. Among them T1, T18, T8, T9 and T13 more stable because they have smaller IPCA1 score that is near to zero. Genotypes, T8, T9, T13 and T18 gave the highest mean yield as well as near to plot origin (smallest IPCA1 scores) but T18 & T9 were more stable than genotypes T8 and T13 because it has smaller absolute IPCA2 score. Genotypes T3, T4, T21, T16, T 19 and T10 appeared to be stable.
