Evaluation of Foxtail Millet and Pearl Millet Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Due to global warming millets should receive more attention for its varietal improvement as they can be grown in areas where irrigation water is limited and other cereals can not be grown successfully. Therefore, with a view, to develop high yielding millets variety in near future, this experiment was undertaken at BARI, Joydebpur, during rabi season 2013-14 to select better performing foxtail millet and pearl millet germplasm. Considering earliness, yield and yield contributing characters 11 foxtail millet lines ( (ISe 2, ISe 132, ISe 375, ISe 376, ISe 745, ISe 663, ISe 963, ISe 1037, ISe 1269, ISe 1387 and ISe 1474) and 23 pearl millet germplasm (IP 3626, IP 4903, IP 5711, IP 6057, IP 12364, IP 12839, IP 13523, IP 13624, IP 14294, IP 14542, IP 16540 and IP 18579) were selected.

Objectives:

To identify early and high yielding foxtail and pearl millets

Methodology:

Twenty three foxtail millet germplasm were grown during rabi 2013-2014 at Joydebpur, Gazipur. Each line was grown in 3 rows of 3.0 m long with row distance of 25 cm and seeds were sown continuously. Standard agronomic practices were followed as and when necessary. Data were recorded on days to heading and maturity, plant height (cm), no. of fertile tillers per plant, panicle length (cm), 1000-grain wt. (g) and yield per plant (g). Forty nine pearl millet germplasm which were collected from ICRISAT, India were grown during rabi 2013-2014 at Joydebpur, Gazipur. Each line was grown in 2 rows of 5.0 m long with row distance of 50 cm and seeds were sown continuously. Standard agronomic practices were followed as and when necessary. Data were recorded on days to heading and maturity, plant height (cm), no. of fertile tillers per plant, spike length (cm), 1000-grain wt. (g) and yield per plant (g).

Achievement/Findings:

For foxtail millet, mean, range, standard deviation and coefficient of variation for days to 50% heading, days to maturity, plant height, number of effective tiller per plant, panicle length (cm), 1000-grain wt. (g) and grain yield per plant were observed. In case of fox millet, maximum coefficient of variation was found in yield per plant (69.30 %) followed by no. of tiller/plant (32.09 %) and panicle length (19.06. %). For pearl millet, mean, range, standard deviation and coefficient of variation for days to 50% heading, days to maturity, plant height, number of effective tiller per plant, spike length (cm), i000-grain wt. (g) and grain yield per plant were also evaluated. Maximum coefficient of variation was found in spike length (32.35. %) followed by yield per plant (20.72 %) and plant height (18.47 %) and. Hence, there is scope to select high yield potential pearl millet germplasm from the studied materials for future use. Hence, there is scope to select high yield potential foxtail millet germplasm from the studied materials.
