Observation Trial of Sorghum Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Due to yield potentiality, sustainable productivity and growing habit sorghum can play an important role in the crop production in Bangladesh and can meet the food demand during food crisis. With this view, this experiment was conducted at BARI, Joydebpur, during rabi season 2013-14 to select better performing sorghum germplasm. Considering plant height, yield and yield contributing characters 11 germplasm(IS 608, IS 4360, IS 12808, IS 20632, IS 30400, IS 3158, IS 2864, IS 9745, IS 21891, IS 30466 and IS 30536) were selected from the 40 sorghum germplasm for further study.

Objectives:

To identify early and high yielding sorghum.

Methodology:

Forty sorghum germplasm were grown during rabi 2013-2014 at Joydebpur, Gazipur. Each line was grown in 2 rows of 5.0 m long with row distance of 50 cm and seeds were sown continuously. Standard agronomic practices were followed as and when necessary. Data were recorded on days to heading and maturity, plant height (cm), no. of fertile tillers per plant, panicle length (cm), 1000-grain wt. (g) and yield per plant (g).

Achievement/Findings:

Mean, range, standard deviation and coefficient of variation for days to 50% heading, days to maturity, plant height, number of effective tiller per plant, spike length (cm), 1000-grain wt. (g) and grain yield per plant were calculated and presented in Table 1. Maximum coefficient of variation was found in panicle length (31.89. %) followed by plant height (25.64 %) and yield/plant (10.30 %). Hence, there is scope to select high yield potential and dwarf sorghum germplasm from the studied materials for future use.
