Survey of the Nutrient Status of the Areas Under Tea in Juri Valley Circle of Sylhet Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The survey was conducted in the seventeen tea estates of Juri valley circle to find out the correlation between the yield of tea and soil properties of the existing tea gardens of Juri valley circle in Sylhet region during 1965-74. A total of 78 soil samples were collected and analysed for mechanical separates, organic carbon, total nitrogen, lime, magnesia, potash, phosphorus, available phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen and organic matter. The results showed that soils of Juri valley circle are heavy in texture. Maintenance of such soils is difficult unless it contains higher proportions of organic matter and associated nitrogen. Lime content of most of the soils is lower than the optimum limit of the range required for good tea soils and requires replenishment. 0.0033% and 0.0136% of available phosphorus and potash respectively in the surface soils may be regarded as minimum standard values for manuring good tea soils of Juri circle. The area which gives low yield the requirement will be less.

Objectives:

To find out the correlation between the yield of tea and soil properties of the existing tea gardens of Juri valley circle in Sylhet region

Methodology:

Seventeen tea estates of Juri valley circle were surveyed. Each unit in the survey consisted of 500 acres or less depending on the size of an estate. Soil samples were drawn for analysis from each location at 0-9", 9-18"and 18-36" depths and thus 78 soil samples were collected. All the soil samples were air dried and processed. The samples were analysed for mechanical separates, total nitogen, lime, magnesia, potash and phosphate were determined by following the method described by Piper (1950). Cambridge pH meter was used for the determination of pH in soil water ratio 1:5. Organic carbon was estimated by wet oxidation method of Walkley and Black (1934) and total organic matter by ignition. Available phosphorus was determined by the method of Trough (1930) modified by Lynch et al. (1949) and available potassium by Dyer’s citric acid method (1894). The particulars regarding the age, yield etc. of the tea was collected from the estates and topography, vacancy etc. were assessed in the field during survey.

It was found that soils of Juri valley circle are heavy in texture. Maintenance of such soils is difficult unless it contains higher proportions of organic matter and associated nitrogen. With the increase of age in the tea sections, vacancy increases resulting in the decrease of yield of tea. Over long period of cultivation the soils have considerably suffered from erosion and loss of organic matter and nitrogen contents. The loss of organic matter and nitrogen contents of the soils are the major cause of poor growth and/or low yield of tea. Lime content of most of the soils is lower than the optimum limit of the range required for good tea soils and requires replenishment. 0.0033% and 0.0136% of available phosphorus and potash respectively in the surface soils may be regarded as minimum standard values for manuring good tea soils of Juri circle. The area which gives low yield the requirement will be less.
