Survey of the Nutrient Status of the Areas Under Tea in Luskerpore Valley Circle of Sylhet Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey was conducted in the seventeen tea estates of Luskerpore valley circle to find out the correlation between the yield of tea and soil properties of the existing tea gardens of Luskerpore valley circle in Sylhet region during 1967-74. A total of 138 soil samples were collected and analysed for mechanical separates, organic carbon, total nitrogen, lime, magnesia, potash, phosphorus, available phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen and organic matter. Results showed that the soils under prolonged cultivation suffered considerably from erosion. Most of the soils have C/N ratio below 10.0. Calcium content of the soils is low and less than the lower limit of the range required for good tea soils. Total phosphoric acid content of the soils are satisfactory but available phosphorus appears to be low. Available potash content is highest in soils between 21 and 30 years. 0.0034% and 0.0091% of available phosphorus and potash respectively in the surface soils may be regarded as the minimum standard values for good tea soils of Luskerpore valley circle.

Objectives:

To find out the correlation between the yield of tea and soil properties of the existing tea gardens of Luskerpore valley circle in Sylhet region

Methodology:

Seventeen tea estates of Luskerpore valley circle were surveyed. From each sampling site three soil samples were drawn at a depth of 0-9", 9-18" and 18-36" and thus 138 soil samples were collected. All the soil samples were air dried and processed. The samples were analysed for mechanical separates, organic carbon, total nitogen, lime, magnesia, potash and phosphorus were determined by following the method described by Piper (1950). Available phosphorus was determined by the method of Trough (1930) modified by Lynch et al. (1949) and available potassium by Dyer’s citric acid method (1894). Nitrogen and organic matter on the non-sandy part of the soils were calculated on the basis of reactive part of the soils. During field survey, particulars of individual section namely topography, age of tea, spacing, vacancy, yield, shade, pests, diseases etc. were noted either in the field or from the garden’s records.

It observed that tea vacancies increased with age of the tea sections and thus the yield decreases. Total potash content is highest in soils upto 20 years age group and lowest in between 21 and 30 years group and over 50 years age group of soils. Available potash content is highest in soils between 21 and 30 years. 0.0034% and 0.0091% of available phosphorus and potash respectively in the surface soils may be regarded as the minimum standard values for good tea soils of Luskerpore valley circle.
