Survey of the Nutrient Status of the Areas Under Tea in Lungla Valley Circle of Sylhet Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey was conducted in the seventeen tea estates of Lungla valley circle to find out the correlation between the yield of tea and soil properties of the existing tea gardens of Lungla valley circle in Sylhet region during 1968-75. A total of 120 soil samples were collected and analysed for mechanical separates, organic carbon, total nitrogen, lime, magnesia, potash, phosphorus, available phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen and organic matter. Results revealed that loss of organic matter and associated nitrogen contents of the soils have been identified as the major cause of poor growth and low yield. The soil erosion is pronounced in the areas which are under tea for longer time. Most of the soils are poor in calcium and required replenishment. Available phosphorus in some of the soils is low but on an average both total and available phosphorus content of the soils appeared to be satisfactory. For manurial purposes, 0.0031% available phosphorus and 0.0158% available potash in the surface soils may be regarded as minimum standard values for good tea soils of Lungla circle. For soils of low yielding sections the requirement will be less.

Objectives:

To find out the correlation between the yield of tea and soil properties of the existing tea gardens of Lungla valley circle in Sylhet region

Methodology:

Seventeen tea estates of Lungla valley circle were surveyed. Each unit in the survey consisted of 500 acres or less depending on the size of an estate. Soil samples were drawn for analysis from each location at 0-9", 9-18"and 18-36" depths and thus and 120 soil samples were collected. All the soil samples were air dried and processed. The samples were analysed for mechanical separates, total nitogen, lime, magnesia, potash and phosphate were determined by following the method described by Piper (1950). Cambridge pH meter was used for the determination of pH in soil water ratio 1:5. Organic carbon was estimated by wet oxidation method of Walkley and Black (1934) and total organic matter by ignition. Available phosphorus was determined by the method of Trough (1930) modified by Lynch et al. (1949) and available potassium by Dyer’s citric acid method (1894). The particulars regarding the age, yield etc. of the tea was collected from the estates and topography, vacancy etc. were assessed in the field during survey.

For manurial purposes, 0.0031% available phosphorus and 0.0158% available potash in the surface soils may be regarded as minimum standard values for good tea soils of Lungla circle. For soils of low yielding sections the requirement will be less.
