Survey of the Nutrient Status of the Areas Under Tea in North Sylhet Valley Circle of Sylhet District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey was conducted in the eleven tea estates of North Sylhet valley circle to find out the correlation between the yield of tea and soil properties of the existing tea gardens of North Sylhet valley circle in Sylhet region during 1969-75. A total of 78 soil samples were collected and analysed for mechanical separates, organic carbon, total nitrogen, lime, magnesia, potash, phosphorus, available phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen and organic matter. Result revealed that that soil erosion is prominent in soils of North Sylhet circle. The poor growth and low yield of tea sections are mainly due to loss of organic matter and associated nitrogen contents of the soils. Calcium content of most of the soils is lower than the lower limit of the range. 0.0021% available phosphorus and 0.008% available potash in the surface soils may be considered as the minimum standard values for good tea soils of North Sylhet circle. However for low yielding sections, the requirement of these constituents will be less. Thus in phosphate and potash manuring the above values will serve as a useful guide for the soils of North Sylhet circle.

Objectives:

To find out the correlation between the yield of tea and soil properties of the existing tea gardens of North Sylhet valley circle in Sylhet district

Methodology:

Eleven tea estates of North Sylhet valley circle were surveyed. From each sampling site three soil samples were drawn at a depth of 0-9", 9-18" and 18-36" and thus 78 soil samples were collected. All the soil samples were air dried and processed. The samples were analysed for mechanical separates, organic carbon, total nitogen, lime, magnesia, potash and phosphorus were determined by following the method described by Piper (1950). Available phosphorus was determined by the method of Trough (1930) modified by Lynch et al. (1949) and available potassium by Dyer’s citric acid method (1894). Nitrogen and organic matter on the non-sandy part of the soils were calculated on the basis of reactive part of the soils. During field survey, particulars of individual section namely topography, age of tea, spacing, vacancy, yield, shade, pests, diseases etc. were noted either in the field or from the garden’s records.
