Economic Contribution of Wheat and Other Rabi Crops Based Cropping System in Northern Districts of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in three northern districts of Bangladesh namely: Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Panchagor considering agronomic potentiality of wheat and its competing crops based cropping systems in these areas. A two-stage sampling framework was used in which field data was collected from key informant farmers of six villages of three Upazilas of the three districts. A focus group discussion was conducted in each survey village for collecting necessary data. Each group consisted of ten to fifteen members. Nine major cropping patterns were identified in the study area. Identifying cropping patters were Wheat -Fallow - T.Aman, Wheat -Mungbean - T.Aman, Wheat -Spring rice - T.Aman, Wheat -Jute -T.Aman, Boro rice -Fallow - T.Aman, Maize - Fallow - T.Aman, Potato -Fallow - T.Aman, Potato - Maize- T.Aman and Potato - Wheat - T.Aman. It was found that among the selected nine cropping patterns, the farmers earned the highest per hectare gross return (Tk, 213359) and gross margin (Tk. 55293) from the pattern Potato - Maize _ T.Aman rice followed by Potato - Wheat - T.Aman (Per hectare gross return Tk. 195215 and gross margin Tk. 47357, Potato - Fallow - T.Aman (Per hectare gross return Tk.170632 and gross margin Tk. 44816). Per hectare production cost for the pattern Potato - Maize - T.Aman was comparatively higher (Tk.l58066/ha) followed by Potato - Wheat - T.Aman (Tk. 147858/ha) and Potato -Fallow - T.Aman (Tk. 125816/ha). No significant difference was found in production cost, gross return and gross margin of the cropping patterns Wheat -Mungbean - T.Aman and Wheat -Jute - T.Aman. The cropping pattern Wheat -Fallow - T.Aman could produce the lowest per hectare gross return (Tk.77269) and gross margin (Tk. 18420) where per hectare production cost was lowest (Tk. 58849) too among of the selected patterns.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Three northern districts of Bangladesh, namely, Dinajpur, Thakurgoan and Panchagor were selected considering agronomic potential of wheat based cropping systems in these areas. A two-stage sampling framework was used in which field data was collected from key informant farmers of six villages of three Upazilas of the three districts. Rabi crops growers of these locations were population for this purpose. A focus group discussion was conducted in each survey village for collecting necessary data. Each group consisted of ten to fifteen members. Partial farm budgeting approach was used to explore the economics of rabi season cropping pattern wherein gross margin (GM) and other residual income measures was used.

Achievement/Findings:

Nine major cropping patterns were identified in the study area. All most all of the major cropping patterns were profitable. Potato followed by maize and potato followed by wheat and even potato followed by fallow were the most profitable cropping patterns in the Northern region. However cost of production was also higher for this patterns and suitable land for those patterns were not too much. Wheat followed by mungbean and even wheat followed by Jute and spring. rice produce reasonable profit and there were not significant difference in profitability among the patterns. There were no significant difference in gross margin of the cropping patterns wheat followed by fallow and Boro followed by fallow which produces the lowest per hectare gross margin and proportion of area adoption is significant.
