Urea molasses multinutrientblocks (UMMB) may be used as a catalytic feeding to the straw- based diet of the indigenous cows for milk production and body weight gain. With that understanding, 49 indigenous post partum cows from 49 marginal farmers of village-Boira under Mymensingh Sadar Upazila, were selected and a cake of 250 g/h/d/ UMMB was supplied with their usual feeding from the date of calving to the date of confirmation of pregnancy. Cows were stall fed. Calves were tied up at night and were free access to their dam during day time. Body weight, milk and condition score of the cows and weight changes of calves were recorded. Similarly, 49 cows were in control group which were fed only basal ration in the equal management in the same village. The results in control and UMMB group were average live weight changes of cows. (g/d)-33#145 and -4#140; mild yield (kg/d) 1.47#0.4 and 1.84#0.83 (p>0.05); condition score 2.31#0.30 and 2.51#0.27 (p-0.10 ) and calf weight gain (g/d) 66#44 and 110#58 (p<0.01 ). It may be concluded that feeding UMMB has a positive effect on live weight change, milk yield and condition score of local cows and weight gain. of calves under the village condition of Bangladesh.

i) To study the effect of supplementing UMMB with basal diet on the live weight gain of indigenous cows and calves.

ii) To study the effect of UMMB on production (milk yield) of indigenous Zebu cows.

The experiment was conducted at the village Boira which is under sadar Upazila of Mymensingh district, Bangladesh for a period of 1995 to 1996 with 98 indigenous lactating cows to boserve the effect of urea molasses multinutrient blocks (UMMB) on the production performance of local cows and calves.Layout of the experiment: A comparative study was conducted with 98 indigenous zebu cows and they were divided randomly into two groups having 49 in each groups. One is control and another is treated group.Experimental Animals: Eighty (80) individual resource poor village farmers with their 98 postpartum cows in total had been selected. All the selected animals were being used for both dairy and draught purposes by the farmers. The calves were tied up at the night and allowed to free access or suckling to the cows during the whole day. The cows were milked in once a day and only in the morning. The experimental cows were divided in to two groups. Before starting the experiment individual weight of the cows were recorded. The body weight of the animals were 115-280 kg. During the experimental period all the cows were mainly stall fed and sometimes tethered. Attempts were made to keep all the animals under the same managemental condition. Rice straw was the staple feed for the cows. Green grasses were available depending on the season. Wheat bran, oil cake etc. were supplied to the cows by the comparatively rich farmers. Deworming drugs were given to the cows before stating the experiment. The production responses (biological/economical) after supplementation of UMMB were being recorded routinely in terms of monthly weight changes of cows (from heart girth), weight changes of calves condition score of cows (on a 5 point scale) and monthly milk yield of cows. Statistical analysis of the collected and calculated data were carried out to analyze the variance in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) according to GOMEZ AND (1994) and test was carried out to find out the Significant difference between means.Preparation of UMMB: Urea in the block is a non protein nitrogenous substance which provides fermentable nitrogen. Wheat bran and rice polish have multiple purpose in the block. Lime was used as a solidifying agent as well as it is a main element for the formation of strong bone structure of the animals. The mixture was then transferred to a dice of ball press then compressed with weight of suitable to make it more compact. Bocks were removed from the dice and was placed on the floor for about 15 hours for more compactness. After solidifying the blocks they were cut at the rate of 250 g for distribution.Method of feeding: The UMMB was fed all the experimental dairy cows once in a day. Each animal of treated group was given 250 g/h/d. UMMB was supplied to the animals separately daily directly by hand. All the cows both control and treated group had free access to normal feed and ad libitum clean drink water.
