Plankton Population of Kaptai Lake: Systematic Account

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Present paper reports 29 genera of phytoplankton belonging to 20 families and 8 genera of zooplankton belonging to 6 families from Kaptal lake. Thirteen genera of phytoplankton are recorded first time.

Objectives:

To identify the systematic accountability of Plankton Population of Kaptai Lake

Methodology:

The present investigation was carried out from March, 1988 to April, 1989 in five sampling stations in Kaptai lake. Plankton samples were collected at fortnightly intervals at each station on each sampling date. To make the sample a good representative of the lake, 50 litres of water was filtered through No. 55 bolting silk plankton net. The volume of the retained fraction was maintained at 5 ml and preserved with 5% formalin. The preserved precipitate was examined microscopically and the identification up to generic level of plankton was.

Achievement/Findings:

During the investigation 29 genera of phytoplankton belonging to 20 families and 13 orders, and 8 genera of zooplankton belonging to 6 families and 3 orders were recorded. This is for the first time that among the 29 genera, 13 genera of phytoplankton belonging to 10 families are reported here. Also, no other author has, so far, reported the presence of either of these 13 genera from any lake of the world except that of Coelosphaerium in Rashdiyah reservoir, Iraq and Hormidium in Konar reservoir, India.
